In the spirit of goodwill and laughter, I think we should find reasons to support drivers on the current F1 grid, especially for those who are new to the sport or who were Schumacher fans and are now bereft of a favourite driver.

So the 'rules' are simple: 10 drivers of your choice, 3 reasons each to support them. Reasons can be straightforward, funny or even sarcastic. No direct put downs though. And please note that these are reasons to become a fan of the driver, and not reasons why they are the best driver. Although the two categories may coincide, it'll be far more fun if your reasons are wacky rather than just "because he is the best". :p

Okay, so here is my list:
  • Sebastian Vettel
    • He has an un-German sense of humour, and gives great interviews. Even outside the car he is entertaining.
    • He is almost always accessible to the fans, which means if you wait for an autograph, you are likely to be rewarded.
    • He wins. Often. So get the champagne chilling and get ready to celebrate! *raise index finger*
  • Kimi Raikkonen
    • For all that he speaks rarely to journalists, whatever he does end up saying is either funny or so straightforward that is becomes funny. Great for a post-race quote.
    • From WRC to boat races, he knows what he is doing.
    • He is one darn good-looking dude. With a nickname like 'Iceman' and a love for Magnum ice cream. Yum.
  • Felipe Massa
    • He is so passionate, it is infectious. Catch him on a Brazil weekend when he performs well and his enthusiasm would be blinding.
    • A rare good loser. Images from Brazil 2008 just make you want to give the title to him for effort if nothing else.
    • His relationship with race engineer Rob Smedley steps into bromance territory. "Felipe baby, stay cool" never grows old.
  • Nico Hulkenberg
    • His nickname is 'the Hulk'.
    • It is refreshing how he manages to keep from bad-mouthing Williams after they dropped him in 2010. While hurt feelings were present, he showed more composure than most when unceremoniously dumped.
    • He surprises people. Be it Lee McKenzie in an interview or on-track in Brazil, he likes to do the unexpected.
  • Jenson Button
    • He is always good for a 'no balance/no grip' meme.
    • He gives thoughtful interviews. The banter he gets going with presenters is wonderful to watch.
    • He is a positive thinker, and rarely do things get him down. Even after a bad race, he is often willing to give a quote (accompanied with a wistful smile).
  • Nico Rosberg
    • He is really good-looking. A mix between Di Caprio and Britney, he is good for eye candy.
    • He has a racing dad, and has performed admirably to live up to that name.
    • He has out-raced a 7 times WDC for 3 consecutive seasons.
  • Romain Grosjean
    • He is, most of the time, smiling. Good for photographs.
    • Despite his own troubles, he has looked geniunely happy whenever his team mate does well. A nice guy.
    • He is the Race of Champions winner. Definitely has raw pace and could be a future race winner.
  • Fernando Alonso
    • He has a twitter account which is regularly in use. Great for a quote.
    • He has consistently performed well wherever he goes. Good outside bet for WDC.
    • He is a football fan. (okay maybe that just appeals to me personally ;) )
  • Mark Webber
    • He does amazing things even off-season, like his Tasmanian challenge.
    • He once raced despite a healing broken leg, against doctor's advise. Totally AussieGrit.
    • He is straight-talking. No need to sort out confusing mind games.
  • Lewis Hamilton
    • He is always in the news, embodying the circus part of F1. No need to search for too long to get information on him.
    • His off-tracks antic can be just as hilarious as what he does on-track. Like his photo shoots.
    • He is fast. And a racer. (whatever that means)
So now you guys have at it!

does he now? What is german humour in your opinion? I'm german.... I don't see him having a humour I haven't seen before... humour depends on the person not the nationality

Sorry if it did not come across but I was playing on the usual joke that Germans have no sense of humour. That said, I have found humour something that crosses all national boundaries. That is why Charlie Chaplin was so good at comedy. ;)

Good one!

  • Lewis Hamilton
    • Just won't keep you bored for long. Most entertaining driver on the grid. WDC drama, many GP wins, Qualy Master, never lifting off wheel to wheel, tweeting telemetry, showing middle finger to the paparazzi and now going to inferior team just for a challenge
    • Incredible skills and speed
    • Very honest and sensitive guy, you can really get close with him emotionally as a fan
  • Mark Webber
    • Just great with a lot of humour
    • Experienced driver with some guts. Like his move on Alonso at Eau Rouge in 2011
    • Not best of the best, so any small win over Vettel is an achievement. Loved watching him outqualify him in the first 3 races of 2012
  • Jenson Button
    • Even funnier than Webber, love watching interviews with him
    • Very consistent driver with great overtaking ability (not that agressive, will wait for his chance, but will eventually perform very smooth move)
    • His girl
  • Sebastian Vettel
    • He is just dominating the field. Every qualy and race he is running for top positions
    • Very talkative, always can learn something from his interviews
    • I don't really like his sense of humour, but at least he is trying to joke whenever he can. Good attitude
  • Kimi Raikkonen
    • Doesn't give a ****, which can be amusing at times.
    • Great car control
  • Kamui Kobayashi
    • You only get KK'd by one driver!
  • Romain Grosjean
    • First lap nutcase, right? Well, that's also entertaining to see him overcome his greatest flaw
    • Seems incredibly fast in Q
  • Fernando Alonso
    • He is talkative. Sometimes it's politics, but at least he keeps in touch with his fans
    • Can appreciate the position he is in right now, being a Ferrari driver, despite not winning WDC for so many years now
    • Just great driver. I think regarded as the best by majority?

Hamilton is entertaining, both on and off the circuit. He is an awesome racer and a pleasure to watch behind the wheel.

Half the reason to why I like drivers such as Maldonado, Perez and Grosjean is because all too often they are made out to be a boogeyman by the fans.

I've also generally had a soft spot for Rosberg and Pic. Dunno why.

However, Alonso, to have that sort of motivation despite not winning any championships in 7 years is just, unreal. Likewise, he is a brilliant driver and a joy to watch.

Historically, my favorite legends are Prost, Brabham and Fangio.

F1 fans perception of "German" humour probably wasn't helped by Schumacher being their first big star either. He took everything very seriously and was an intense personality (particularly in his first career). Of course that intense drive is also a big part of the reason he is a 7xWDC

 That's true. Schumacher seemed to open up a lot more after retirement, so even when he returned to the grid in 2010, he still maintained a relatively easy-going personality as compared to his 1st career self.
