Wasn't Toyota banned from racing once for cheating on their engine? I forgot which series it was. Does anyone know about this? (It was something to do with Turbo engine...)

I don't think they will be successful in their first year...Yeah they have a boat load of money. But so as Ford (who owns Jaguar). Ford has more money than Honda + Toyota combined. (Remeber Ford's 98 & 99 profit?) Plus Ford is more experienced in racing than Toyota, yet they still struggle.

I guess the result of F-1 will come with the amount of dedication.

We shall see how they do in 2002. Hope Toyota don't cheat this time...

But for now, I'll give Toyota thumbs down.

Yes, it was in the WRC. Can't remember the year though. They were caught with an oversized turbo inlet restrictor I believe. In order to keep engine power down in the turbo cars they have to have a 36mm (I think) restrictor before the turbo inlet.

Can't damn their F1 entry because of this though. Good luck to them.

That restrictor was illegal allright :). I'll try and find a picture of it.

The dimensions of the thing were ok (not oversized) but they they were able to move the whole construction a few mm's so air could by-pass the restrictor...very ingenious indeed.

Very similar to how Ford and Chevy teams have cheated in Nascar/stockcars for decades. I'd hate to think you are giving them the  too;)

As a matter of fact I have done the same thing when I raced stockcars.

Lantern,

Is your embarrassment due to the fact that you cheated, or does it come from the fact that you once actually participated in stock car racing??? ;)

It was Toyota Team Europe that cheated with the turbocharger on the Rally cars, is'nt the F1 Toyota seperate from them?

Same outfit, based in Köln (Germany). Only the name changed to reflect the new direction taken in Motorsport.

They cheated in WRC 95!
FIA discovered that TTE deliberately maked some "hole" in (or around) the turbo air restrictor of Auriol's Celica in Catalunya Rally.
FIA suspected that they did it in the early race too.So FIA cancel whole team's result in 95 and ban the team in the first half of 96.
Finally Toyota decided to quit the 96 season and re-entryed in 97 by a Corolla WRCar.
I'm not sure did Toyota knew it or just the team.

TTE/Toyota cheated in the past doesn't mean they will cheat forever dark!!!

My comment is "wait & see"
