Checking a pile of MOTORING NEWS while listing them on a well known auction site I found the following clip of a Ferrari 312B3 testing (usuccessfully!) at Silverstone in the June 30 1977 issue.

Whats the story here? I have run searches on TNF to no avail (no doubt using the wrong spelling...) Was this a potential Shellsport 5000/Aurora F1 entry or the 70's equivalent of a track-day-hero's car? Neither driver nor owner ring bells...but Vernon...pools money maybe? Like Nigel Moores?

Dear Simon,

Mike Vernon is a (Ferrari) collector, and Lou Lorenzini, now deceased , seems to have been a 'character'...More on him on Ferrarichat.com..

Only snippets sorry

Lorenzini was identified as the driver of another of Vernon's Ferraris in this earlier thread:

Who is the driver of this Ferrari 312PB?

This led to the obvious follow-up thread asking for more details about Lorenzini, but very little emerged:

Louis Lorenzini

Seems that Lorenzini has owned a shop in Manchester 'Lorenzini Autosport'

then moved to Lisbon, where he had another company (Lorenzini Autosport)--at least he sold a Ferrari through this company..

As noted above, Lou used to run a preparation business in Prestwich, and I remember him preparing Brian Classic's cars, including R2A, for a time. In fact, he drove the car at Shelsley Walsh in 1994 for Brian.

Thanks chaps. So sounds like a 'jolly' that went awry then. Purley, Trimmer etc clearly didn't have a lot to worry about....

Is there some confusion withe the Ferrari that raced against the Cosworth cars in historic racing a few years ago? I forget what model it was.

I think Tony Worswick wanted to run a car in British F3000 with a Ferrari engine instead of a Cossie but wasn't allowed.

John Foulston turned up at an Oulton Park meeting in the mid 80's with a 70's F1 Ferrari. I'm not sure which model, but it was similar to the one in the first post. He was going to just give it a demo but decided to race it in the Historic F1 race at the last minute. It didn't last long as the rear suspension collapsed slightly (I think the big rear crossmember broke). Someone must have a photo of it somewhere.

I seem to recall that John Bosch raced a Ferrari 312 T5 in Historic F1 several years ago. I saw it at Brands a couple of times. I also remember a 312T and Hesketh 308 being demonstrated at Brands during the only truck meeting I ever attended in 84 or 85. Both cars were owned (I think) by John Foulston.

John Bosch won his class in the 2005 FIA Historic F1 Championship driving a Ferrari 312T3.

It was a 312T from 1975, Alan. I do have a photo of it somewhere in the negative files, but not immediately to hand.

Definately a "T" as I think it was the crossmember that was part of the transverse gearbox casing that broke causing one side of the rear suspension to drop.

Foulston had a 312B3 in 1984 and the 312T in 1985, though I'm not sure that he raced them both

The one seen most regularly in historic racing was John Fenning's 312T5, usually driven by Mike Littlewood, and a regular competitor throughout the 1990s

I think it was Shellsport rather than Aurora.

Didn't a privateer Ferrari take part in a late 70's Race of Champions?

Was it not a Formula Libre race?

An RF82 behind the Ferrari, Phil, much more interesting...

T'Sport, I don't recall any Ferrari F1 entered in G8 or Aurora at all. The most exotic one I remember was Jeremy Turner entered in a Brabham BT45 at a '78 AFX race, he never showed though. Anyone else know anything about this entry??

Foulston raced the 312T at Brands in '85. Sounded good, but soundly beaten by Ray Bellm in an FW08.

I'm intriuged as well. I've got a 1978 Aurora programme from Brands in August and he is in the entry.

I wrongly thought Martinis Everest car did Group 8 or an Aurora race.

Martini himself did do a couple of British F1 races in 1978 in Mario Deliotti's Ensign N175, winning at Donington.

I think there was a clip on YouTube of the 1978 Zandvoort Auora race in which Martini features at the pointy end.

But back to one query for Allan Brown... we've waited since March to hear back about. What was the story with the BT46 ????

Michael Vernon owned a string of hairdressing salons in the Midlands, if I remember correctly.

Two 1974 312 B3's went to the UK after bing sold of by SEFAC. I believe 010 and 012. Chassis 010 being the modified 1973 car. Possibly 010 was with Vernon?

His stable also hosted at various moment during the 70's/80's place to 312 PB 0880, 512 S 1006, 212 F1 #102, 500/625 F2 #54/1 and possibly even 330 P3/4 0846 (You know!) among several street cars.
