Radio chatter on Lap 310: NASCAR's David Hoots just came over the radio and said the 88 of Dale Earnhardr Jr. is behind the 11 of Denny Hamlin.

Anyone know why?

He failed to maintain speed under caution. He was trying to save fuel.

When was the last time a driver really retired due to age? It seems like every driver is semi-retired.

Dale Jarrett?

Or do you mean retired at an age that may have been a bit prematurely injury free?

Ned Jarrett or Junior Johnson perhaps

Non sense. Dale Sr. won his 7th championship at age 43.

Too Be fair Neither Dale Sr or Richard Petty (1979 age 42) had a championship winning teammate at the time of their last championship

If anything Jeff may have 7 or 8 championships by now if not for Jimmy joining the team . Also you cant discount the Terry Labonte championship in 1996 as possibly stealing one from Jeff as well.

But i agree Jeff is fast running out of time in his "drive for five" and if he doesnt win the championshpi this year or next i doubt he ever wins another.

Also his current family situation may play a part where maybe racing at this point isnt as consuming as it once was .

Along with all the money perhaps the "hunger" just isnt there anymore and Jeff figures Jimmy will be the next to 7 championships if it's meant to be.

Apart from Edward's victory the race felt like a carbon copy of last year. An early agressive JJ, smart fuel from Brad, Bowyer lurking in there, Dale Jr. showing some speed but not that "he can win" form and the past champions Gordon and Stewart being invisible for most of the race. Not to mention Martin always fadding back after a good first half. What the heck happened back there Mr. Waltrip?

It seemed like the secret to being fast was track position. Not a good sign for the new generation of cars, though I guess we haven't seen them on 1.5 mile tracks yet.

Ned Jarrett or Junior Johnson perhaps

Ned had a nagging injury from an earlier broken back.

Gordon has two especially strong seasons since Johnson joined, 2004 and 2007, and lost both Chases after winning the 'regular' season. We all know they race the system of the particular year, but in 07 he was ahead of JJ by nearly 400 points overall, a tough way to lose. The team has seemed to have a lot of trouble finishing off races after running well, a turn around from 1995-2001 when they were known for closing out. As others have mentioned the field is stronger overall and back then he was clear #1 at Hendrick (LaBonte did get the one title on consistency, but the wins were like 11 or 12 to 2).

I realize it's only the 2nd race but when you dig a hole it's hard to get out of and there are some big names in a pretty deep hole as of now.

I found it quite amusing AJ Allmendinger has more points in his one 2013 race than both Busch brothers and Harvick
