During the Australia weekend I noticed the first third of the lights on Alonso's steering wheel that indicate engine revs (the green section) was not working correctly. It sometimes showed all five lights illuminated, sometimes none or only the first two or three. However, regardless of where he was in the rev range, these lights did not change as they should. The red and blue banks were working normally, and I also noticed this on both Vergne and Kimi's wheels during the race at one point while and Massa's appeared to be operating as normal, so it's neither the Ferrari car or engine on that basis. I know there were issues with telemetry but I wouldn't think that would affect the shift lights. I also doubt they're being used to indicate any other form of information, so does anyone have any idea what was wrong, what caused it or why it happened to at least three different cars from different teams?

The shift lights have dual functionality and are also used to display KERS usage IIRC.

It's obviously McLaren's fault.

Hmm, that's an interesting one. I thought the KERS usage was displayed numerically but maybe that's an easier method visually. Only thing with that is I imagine it would display empty KERS as no lights but I'm fairly sure I saw Alonso's go from two lights up to three at one point. It definitely wasn't an audio/ video sync issue, you could see the red and blue banks go up and down while the green stayed constant.

I did consider ECU trouble but the fact Massa's worked fine made me question that.

The green LED bank can definitely be switched to display different information, KERS, DRS and maybe more I don't know.

I have a replica F1 wheel for gaming on the PC and you can set it to do the same thing. And yes I thought it wasn't working properly too until I checked the settings and found it was set to display the amount of KERS charge left :)

During the GP weekend I noticed that Bottas' steering wheel was displaying the DRS position, one green light for closed, all green lights for open.

Heh, interesting. Thanks for confirming that, I'll be sure to keep an eye out for this in future. What make and model wheel do you have, out of interest?

Roso F1 wheel which has the SLI-PRO shift light controller. You can find both via Google, if you want any more info we should probably move the discussion to the 'Racing Simulators' subforum :-)

Looks like a very nice piece of kit but well out of my league. But no more, wouldn't want to start breaking forum etiquette in my first topic. ;)
