Just tripped over a series on BBC 4 last night (Monday) at 8.00pm/12.15am called "Motor Racing at the BBC: That Petrol emotion". It concentrated on F1 in the 50's and there seems to be another episode on later in the week (Thursday I think) so they may be working their way through the decades. It didn't go into things in too much detail but there was a bit of cool footage of some of the more historic races, might be worth checking out. It doesn't appear to be on i-player though for some reason.
