It costs money, I guess that's the problem.

This is my guest. ISC, NASCAR, everyone involved is all about safety...but at a price. It does cost money to install them, probably quite a bit so they just do what they think is necessary. But the Hobbs quote is a common expression I've heard for awhile. NASCAR has even seen this over the last few seasons. It seems like we have this conversation every year because a driver has hit an inside wall or some obscure corner where there is no barrier. If they don't install the barriers on all inside barriers at all tracks now, then I really dread what has to happen for them to see it as a necessity.

While I agree with the SAFER barrier talk, I also hope this will somewhat highlight some of the idiotic driving in NASCAR.

You could plan ahead. You could say "hmm, let's look at our tracks and see if there's any areas we could have Hamlin-esque incidents" instead of waiting for one, 'reviewing it' and then coming up with a solution everyone else already adopted.

This is where the Champion drivers in NASCAR need to speak up. The problem is that Gordon has always avoided controversy because it took focus away from the job at hand. Johnson has basically learned from Gordon and also avoids controversy. I think it is their duty as Multi-Champions to call attention to these obvious safety matters. Stewart has an image as a loose cannon, no one cares what Kurt says and perhaps Brad is to young.

I'm not sure why they would have to wait for something to happen before they put something somewhere, specially a wall facing the track like that. Money I guess? But that's like saying Oh i'm not going to wear my seatbelt until I get launched out a window.

Whatevs, at least they're looking at it and hopefully something will be done about it; and I hope track/NASCAR officials will be more prudent in the future with providing their drivers with more saftey around the track.

Sadler or McDowell, most likely.

You'd go with Vickers before Sadler, surely.

Vickers will have some MWR races inbetween if Hamlin is gone for multiple months. I think JGR would want to maintain some continuity while Hamlin is gone.

Would've been fun to see Gibbs using Kelly Bires (or Regan Smith/Dave Blaney), but that's just because I like a good underdog story/like those drivers.

Underdog stories are overrated.

Though, I guess Parker Kligerman, Drew Herring or Ryan Truex would be your underdogs for this ride. None of your choices make much sense (Regan Smith is Chevy faction, Dave Blaney already has a full ride, and Kelly Bires. . .yeah).

Martin is in the 55 for most of the year, like at least 2/3 of it. If there were any clashes over the run Vickers would need to replace Hamlin, I think you could find someone else for the 55, or Martin could drive the 11, or try out some other guys, or whatever.

This thread could go on for a while, considering the events unfolding and we are race-less next week.

So how about a little NASCAR caption time?

Why not A J Almendinger for Martinsville April 7th ( 2nd in spring of 2012 ) & Texas April 13th (19th 10th 15th last 3 races there)

Then Ken Schrader for Kansas April 21st Would love to see Kenny race a good cup car one more time

The Denny can make a grand return to the series at his home track at Richmond Aprl 27th

Yes, he does keep himself busy, but that doesn't change the fact he was hand-picked and massively promoted and supported to the point of bludgeoning (yes, beyond Danica...it was that bad). ESPN flew him to the West Coast constantly so they could hype him on their telecasts and to add to his CV. They practically bought him the USAC Western States title...or at least tried to. No one else had that sort of advantage*. That wasn't him working hard, that was others working hard for him. True, he had to do the driving, but, for that matter, so did Logano (shrug).

Difference is they both drive but only one is massively talented and multi level multi series champion and that's Tony Stewart. Joey hasn't been champion of anything since he was 12 years old racing legends cars in Atlanta. He's going on 6 years in Sprint cup in top quality equipment and has 2 wins to show for it. This is NOT somebody that has earned any right to throw their weight around.

And seeing as how there's overwhelming support for what Tony said throughout the garage with the drivers........I'm thinking they know more than we do.

I understand what Jim means but I also understand what Tony meant. Tony does stay busy.

In fact I was thinking about his team-ownership last night. If the team and driver get a 50-50 split on prize money, how much does Tony take home  Maybe 75% because Gene Haas would get a chunk, or he gives his team a really good bonus.

Just like I expect Roger puts his share back into his crew.

Team money <> team owner's money. It's part of the budget, I'm sure.

Sadler to run Sprint Cup race in 2013: Elliot Sadler is scheduled to run at least one un-named NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in 2013, running the #81 Alert Energy Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. This new energy product, was recently introduced by the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company. The scheme is purple, orange-and-yellow.(lionelnascarcollectables.com.(3-26-2013)

I think the temp 11 seat will go to Sadler. Not a confirmation, but if Gibbs had plans to put Sadler in a Cup car anyway then surely he is the first option should Hamlin not be cleared to race.

NASCAR has a problem with outspoken drivers. A couple years back that usually meant that in the next race your car failed the prerace inspection. Gordon learned that in 2000 at the fall Richmond race (illegal intake manifold, dsq after the race, they used the piece from May to September with no problems at all) and at the 2007 Sonoma race where the same car which was sitting one week prior to the race in the Nascar Research and Development Center suddenly found to be illegal in the prerace inspection. At least in the manifold case there was a rumour in the JG message boards that he or his team was somewhat critical of Nascar. Lets face it: it was only one man who could critise Nascar witout consequences and he died in 2001.

Pfffrt! Nothing I like is overrated (Dave Blaney, Robby Gordon, Marussia... ) :cat:

And yes, they are more likely. It's just that I've always been a fan of those absurd mid-season moves, due to sponsors, injury or performance.

Hasn't he been better, or "better" at the short tracks?

I would see JJ Yeley to replace Hamlin. He's the guy who did the job each time in the past for Gibbs, isn't he?

If we're talking past Gibbs drivers, bring back Bobby LaBonte. Kind of an odd Nationwide lineup for Gibbs with all veterans.

I completely agree about being proactive rather than as far as safety (and other things) but don't have a lot of confidence in the organization that it will actually happen faster than turtle pace.

Nah, the last time he popped up with Gibbs was when he filled in for Stewart when he was too sick to drive halfway through the July Daytona race. That was in 2008. He's been with start-and-parks until recently with his break with Baldwin.

McDowell has been the defacto reserve Gibbs guy the last couple of years (And that was before Sadler and Vickers came into the picture).

Not about the injury, just that it wasn't retaliation.

"I just thought we were racing hard, you know?" Logano said Monday. "It happens. You don't ever want anyone to get hurt; you don't ever want anything to happen, especially to Denny. We were racing really hard there at the end of the race. I wish there was a SAFER barrier down there, and I wish I knew before I made any comments on TV also." Logano insisted he was not trying to wreck Hamlin "in any way, shape or form.

Funny thing is that from all the polls and comment sections I've seen regarding this, Logano has actually gained fans.
