The podium ceremony for Race 1 at the Laguna Seca WSBK event in 1998 never actually happened, but if it had then only one rider would have been present. With the race being abandoned at half-distance following two horrendous accidents, Troy Corser was awarded first place (and was frustrated that he was only awarded half-points) while Akira Yanagawa and Doug Chandler, classified second and third, were both in hospital after being involved in the crashes that stopped the race.

I know it's a different culture, different country and so on, and so on. But I still think this is ****ing ********.

Since i'm not 'merican i'm inclined to agree, but i get the impression guns etc are ingrained in their way of life, still, it does have an element of cool about it.

Fact is Nigel Mansell is the driver with the most mishaps, cutting his hands, banging his head, collapsing, theatrically pushing his car till he himself fades.... than any other driver in history.

What was behind this? Comedy? Narzism? Exhibitionism? Show?

There are two podium celebrations I would have loved to see: the shocked looks on everyone when Nuvolari won the 1935 German GP in an Alfa, and the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans, when Dan Gurney spontaneously invented spraying the champagne.

Yeah, that was the occasion. However the photo I remembered was taken from the other angle, so you could really see the empty podium... and the grim, emtpy feeling as well...

Maybe the lack of blood flowing to his brain because it was all flowing to his huge gonads?

They don't do podiums in NASCAR but the Texas winner not only dons a cowboy hat, he poses with six-shooters, pretending to shoot them.

After living in many quite different countries -including 5 months in the same State you live :) - I have always considered myself very open minded. Pictures like that, prove me I'm wrong and I'm not that open minded :well: I suppose, being born and grown up in the second land of the word with the most restrictive weapon-owning-law of the word (behind Japan) has some consequences and that picture really spooks me: urg!

people are forgetting Imola 1982: Didier Pironi won that race after doing a 'Vettel' on Gilles Villeneuve at the end of the race. Villeneuve had to be pushed on the podium and he was visually very angry and upset with Pironi. Michele Alboreto, driving a Tyrrell, was the 3rd man on the podium.

Yeah, Gilles' last race and the last time, for all we know, he spoke with Pironi. It was one of the dullest races ever, the one where most teams didn't race because of the Brazilian round.

the new nascar fake podium is pretty funny. its pre filmed clips of the drivers waving and celebrating (individualy), then stuck together into a podium with some stuff going on in the background. its hilliariously bad

Does anyone remember the Spanish GP podium from a few years ago when DC jumped onto the winners bit and grabbed the trophy and started celebrating?

Its was briefly caught on TV and was really funny.

MURRKA!

(For the record, I don't have an opinion--it's part of the constitution so it's not going to change).

I appreciate seeing others' opinions.
