Good on him. To those of my Dad's generation he was the best. He spoke to me once - I think it was 'excuse me' as he wheeled Minter's Gilera past. ;)

As per link above, I posted in time, but in the wrong place. Here it is again:

"March 29th marks Geoffrey Duke (OBE)'s 90th birthday.

I happened to meet him four years ago at the Monza circuit, where Team Gilera for 2009 was introduced coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the manufacturer. We were presented with a book, which I has signed by both G.Duke and Marco Simoncelli. Needless to say, everytime I see the book on its shelf, I can't help thinking that the old riding ace is still with us while the younger isn't anymore.

Marco/armchair from Milan, Italy"

Seeing as how it was Mothers Day in Australia on Sunday....I was at my folks home.

Dad told me once again how in 1955 (about January/February?) he drove my Mum and I (aged about 5) to Mount Panorama Bathurst in the Morris Minor low light convertible to see Geoff Duke racing the Gilera.

This was a big deal...

The track was unpaved, and Dad had trouble remembering where we were viewing from apart from "up the top of the mountain"....he also thought the bikes were going right to left (rather than left to right as in most viewing spots on the outside of the track)...so maybe they allowed spectators in the infield? I have never heard anyone say they ever ran Bathurst clockwise (apart from Hill climbs) and cars released to coast back to the pits :-)

Geoff streeted the field, Dad said he must have been about a lap ahead...

The main memory Dad (mid 80s) has....is the tremendous "whoosh" the bike made, much quieter than the bangers and thumpers that made up the field....lovely stuff

Happy Birthday Geoff!
