I could think of Nigel Mansell at Williams in 1986 and Lewis Hamilton in 0
7. Who else?

I doubt Webber will be consistently good enough for Nr. 1 :p but I guess Hülkenberg .... could have easily become #1 at F-I

Hmm...i Wonder if Lauda/Prost was just 1 and 1. Lauda in 84 may have been the number 2 as Prost was drafted in to win the title? THats going way back though and I don't really know cos I wasn't around at the time I can only draw some reviews etc

Number 2 turned Number 1

I would have thought a number 1 became a number 2.

It was that bad.

I know that in 1974 Lauda was hired before Reggazoni.
But if he was an intended leader?
In 1974 Reggazoni had the better season of the two but in '75 Lauda became the team leader because of his results.

One for sad reasons:

Scheckter in 1974. Hie was hired to become Francois Cevert's teammate after Jackei Steart left Tyrrell and Cevert finally becoming the number one.
Buth then he got gilled in the last race of 1973 and Scheckter pretty much became the instant new teamleader.

Massa in 2008.

Ferrari had equal status, Massa only helped Kimi 2007 when he had lost his chance for the tile and kimi helped massa 2008 when he had no possibilities for title.

There wasn't an official number 1 or number 2, although Lauda was on a much higher salary - but that had more to do with Prost being fired by Renault so late in the day that Ron knew he could get him cheap, as Alain had no other top class options available.

Lauda felt that this may have been one reason why the team seemed to be more in favour of Prost winning the title.

Graham Hill at Lotus in 1968 and Damon Hill at Williams in 1994. In both cases the Hills, father and son, had to assume leadership of their team after the death of their team-mate: Jim Clark in a F2 race at Hockenheim and Ayrton Senna in the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola.

Nope. He was going to do a No.2 but after eating the bunch of jalapeños he got the runs and it was so runny that effectively it was a No.1. Hey, you asked.

Fangio on Farina. Rick Mears on Tom Sneva. Schumacher on Patrese.

One of the forgotten bits of F1 history is Watson beat Lauda in their years at McLaren. Alternative 1984 might have been interesting.

So the jalapenos made him faster? You're saying he went running and became much faster, did he use the jalapenos as some sort of natural performance enhancer? Doesn't sound plausible, can you explain it in more detail?

Keke Rosberg, I believe, was hired as a number 2 to Carlos Reutemann at Williams in 1982, but quickly became number 1 after Carlos said he'd had enough.

Vettel came into Red Bull as #2.
Coulthard turned the tables around on Häkkinen in 2001.
