Picked up an issue of F1 magazine when on holiday in the UK last week. Great magazine with lots of info. Can't believe the picture of Mika being lifted out of his car in Australia- he looked dead. Is this magazine put out by Bernie as someone suggested on another thread? (I remember being in Europe the week after Gilles was killed and a magazine I picked up then had a picture of him in his casket! Not used to seeing that in the USA!)
If this mag is available in the states, I'll never get anything else done!

It's probably available in the States....I picked up a copy at Vancouver airport. Great mag, but as someone else said, if Bernie owns it you won't see anything critical of F1. Some really good stories, but I didn't really need to see Schumi and Corrinna swapping spit.

Oh is this the new one made by the FOA.

I hear its not too bad.

have to say though that the best racing mag is autosport. its been going strong since the 60's and it gives a great view on all forms of racing, not only f1.

I read somewhere that Lauda was the editor, I didn't know how versatile he is! Anyway, seems that he resigned from his post at the magazine, going to get a second job at Jaguar as head of security no doubt :o

Former triple world champion Niki Lauda has announced his decision to step down from his job as editor in chief of Bernie Ecclestone's new F1 Magazine.

The publication, which included an impressive array of journalists like Gerald Donaldson, Joe Saward, David Tremayne, Jane Nottage and Christopher Hilton, was released for the first time earlier this month.

Lauda admitted he leaves his post because he wants to concentrate on his role as chief executive of a division of Ford's Premier Automotive Group, owners of the Jaguar Racing team.

"I am stepping down as editor in chief from the May issue," Lauda said. "I cannot fulfil my roles for both Formula One Magazine and Jaguar.

"And frankly Jaguar needs me more."

I ended up subscribing online, but had also e-mailed them about it being sold in Australia. For any Australians wanting to know about it, yes it will be sold in retail outlets. For more information, I was told to contact the Australian distributor:

The second issue is as thick and glossy as the first. With plenty of retro articles included and some very upto date news and race reviews for Australia & Malaysia. Looks like a winner!

I found the magazine to be okay, if a bit on the trashy side. I don't need to see pictures of Hakkinen and Moss with blood running down their faces, unconcious. The articles with Michael and Corrina and Jenson and his girl seemed too much like that Brit rag Hello.

One of their writers, Jane Nottage, gives me the impression she moved over from writing for the Sun newspaper.

I'll give it another shot, though. The articles on Mario Andretti, Williams and the pre-season breakdown were pretty good.

i found that their pre-season team analysis is the best written. They are more indepth with personnel changes and sponsor money. And i also enjoy the Stirling Moss story.

Their latest advert showing Mika and Michael crying (both after their Monza races) and making out they missed out on the 1st issue was a little over the top imo. Making fun out Schumachers breakdown esspecially is a little tasteless.

The weeping scenes with Mika in the bushes and Michael at the press conference have also appeared on ITV in an ad for the F1 magazine. I wondered if they were asked for their permission to use these pictures. It seemed all a bit tacky to me as both men were actually rather distressed at the time the photos were taken. Will we get photos of dead or injured racers or fans next??

They are just light natured ads. Take them for what they are.

I loved the first issue. The stories of Hakkinen and Senna's accidents almost moved me to tears.

Definately a decent mag.

aahhh lighten up anything has to be better than f1 racing......the best bit so far imo was seeing smillenueve attempt a sexy schumi on the cover of issue 2,puny pimpley biceps et all
personally i like the gory stuff, its nice to get a sense of history, technical background as well as curent affairs and race reports.the absence of darren heath can only be a BIG plus.im overexposed already.
so what if it has more agendi than a thing with an awful lot of agenda.its fresh!!

if they are going to be showing that advert in every break this GP ill be quite annoyed, I dont want to watch MS in tears and RS looking very distressed for the sake of an f1 magazine advert, couldnt they have at least used other scenes?

Just got the second edition of the mag. The first one had Schuey with top buttons of his shirt undone. This one has a shirtless JV. What next????!!! A driver in speedos or something.....

Someone said that these mags were aimed at male audiences so why were they putting these sorts of pictures on the cover. I told him he'd be surprised how many females were into the sport but I would still have thought the majority target audience would be male.

dooly, it might attract more females while its not enough to stop males fans from buying it.

Noticed this morning that they forgot to put in a championship points table!

My thoughts exactly! That was really unsettling.

IMHO -- overall, I like the mag -- it's very much a "coffee table" type of publication. Very pretty, glossy pictures. Very different as well -- from the other publications out there. A bit too "glossy" and Fanzine like for my tastes (beefcake photos and all!) but quite interesting. If we get it here in Canada -- I'm sure it available just about everywhere else. Next issue should be out soon. Ummmm -- a shirtless JV. I'm not used to F1 catering to "my" tastes! Actually --- I'd rather see his car.

I quite like this mag.
My girlfriend actually bought for me, I hadn't even heard of it. The Schumacher article was pretty good..........different. The Senna article was also good. I thought the ads of the crying and yelling was really funny. I look forward to buying more issues.

I thought F1 Magazine was better than F1 Racing. I would buy it again, but it seems in Canada, we never get ANY racing magazine in time for the GP previews.

Anyone interested in starting a North American edition with me?

I think the mag has excellent production values. My main concern is that it's owned by Bernie (BernieMag TM) and won't publish anything truly controversial. Unless he's made a promise to keep his bony nose out of the editorial. Which is highly unlikely.

One thing that pissed me off was John Watson opining that, given the choice between Jaguar, Mercedes, and BMW, 90% of buyers would spring for a Jag if the marque was properly marketed. What a joke! Jags (especially the sedans) are bad-handling crap.

Can you say M5? How about Z9? M3? Sure you can. Show me a Jag that even compares.

 I think the advert for the new F1 Mag is funny, poor Ralf he looks so embarassed, I don't think he's ever seen his big bro 'cry' before!

The articles on Hakkinen and Senna were very informative and sad but have to be read. This months issue has the story of Jochen Rindts last day, and you find yourself wishing that he had quit when he thought about retiring instead of carrying on, because the cars were so unsafe 'in those days'.

A good mag, includes the past as well as the present. Worth the money.

I thought it was a much better magazine that F1 Racing (I pick it up (for the second time) along w/ Bernie's). F1 Racing seems to want to slam on anything not British. Seems to be more on the order of the National Enquirer. Anyway to my point.. you can find them at http://www.f1magazin...tion=go&to=main although if you got the first issue there is a subscription card for 15 issues for (I believe) the same price as quoted on the website if returned by April 30.

Depends - most brits [the origin of the magzine] would like to own a british jag rather than a BMW or Merc. I know i'd rather have a XK8 rather than either a M5 or Z9.

As for the handing of modern jags - I've searched the web but I can't seem to find any large body of support for that statement. But I'll admit the S-Type is pig ugly.

Mr. A:

I've seen review after review in car mags that say the M5 is the best sedan in the world by a country mile bar none. Similar review for the new M3. As for Jag sedans, I saw a recent test at Laguna Seca, and the thing handled very poorly. All manner of comments about "Jaguar has a lot to learn about designing for perfomance handling" and the like. Jags are just boulevard cruisers - that's why nobody races them anymore. All show, no go. It'd take an M5 over everything but a Ferrari, and I bet the M5 would give the Ferrari a pretty good thrasing too!

I didn't say that the M5 didn't have the better handling, just that I disagreed with the term "bad-handling crap" As for "Jags are just boulevard cruisers - that's why nobody races them anymore", well thats probabily right but then I don't get the impression that cars such as the S-class and the XJ series were ever designed to be the base for racing cars!

Plus the term "if the marque was properly marketed." means that you can get away with quite a lot :) "Ladas would be the most desirable cars if the marque was properly marketed" :)

I got the mag and it's all right but I don't think the news section is done very well. In comparision to F1Racing it's even boring. The things they report on everyone knows about. The only funny things in the whole mag are the quotes page and Irvine's column. I think they should lighten it up a bit and make it more entertaining. The interviews are very good though. especially the MS one (apart from the pics) It was v. different...;);)

I read the second issue over the weekend. As a JV fan -- I was impressed, but that's biased. I couldn't help but wonder though --- wouldn't the beefcake photo be embarrassing? Wouldn't there be teasing in the paddocks -- among his mates? I mean really -- it is about racing cars --- not the bod. (although I must admit, I for one liked the pics) Same about Schumi and his wife all kissy faced in the first issue. It just strikes me as being odd.

Question though -- are the covers the same in every country? I know with F1 Racing -- they are not.

Also, did anyone notice thta F1 Racing rally spruced up their issues since this pub. came out. They are larger -- and glossier than before.
Competition is very good for the consumer.

It's funny, I wondered the same thing about the cover. That was why I got F1 Racing because the covers were different. And you are right about them getting their act together now that Bernies' mag is here. I was going to cansel my subscription to them this year because they were getting very lame. I thought the beefcake pic was very dumb (not just because I'm a guy), it didn't fit the context of the story. I also thought the story about his manager, Mrs. Pollock, was better reading. Did you? I don't have the first issue yet of the mag but, they tell me it's coming. So I can't compare it.

I had mixed feelings about that one. It was interesting and gave a different perspective, but it still felt somewhat fanzine like to me. Like we are looking for info -- and the fact that you know someone famous makes you interesting. Still -- a good read. Also the article on JV --- written by Donaldson. The author is biased to begin with -- I've a JV bias, so I know that I'm getting a biased story! He didn't tell me anything I didn't know.

Having said all that -- I do like the magazine and look forward to more issues.

Well I said before that I'd give it a second chance. I picked up the issue with JV on the cover and I have to change my opinion.
It's shaping up quite nice, I found a lot of articles of interest. The whole breakdown of JV's crash at Melbourne was insightful. I didn't get that detailed an account anywhere else.

But the cover....I buried it under a couple of other magazines when I went to the cashier. Can't they put a nice picture of some cars?
