But with turbos coming in next year, I was wondering if the airbox might disappear?

I don't know what's happening with the roll hoop but they might use it for more cooling than they do now.

reduce the sidepod size and radiator intakes
From what I gather, the new engines will require much better cooling than V8s and consequently bigger sidepods.

I think he meant that the airbox can help in reducing the sidepod size and radiator intakes. From what I gather, the new engines will require much better cooling than V8s and consequently bigger sidepods.
but yeah, as far as I know, the mandated changes are:
-165 cm wide front wing (currently 180) distributed 50-65-50 cm (currently 60-60-60 cm, as in aero parts - middle aero neutral zone - aero parts)
-2cm higher rear wing, no beam wing (probably reintroduces rear wing middle pillars?)
-much lower nosetip (around 18 cm over reference plane? instead of current 55 cm)
-single exhaust outlet, probably over the gearbox

renderings of the new engine has single turbo air intake on top of engine, so most likely roll-hoop is going to be used as airbox.Although radical changes were announced at first, I believe there is an understanding now to keep the current package pretty much alive.

Being the most commercial of sports, I can't see any sizeable reduction in any of the space behind the driver.

Weren't the engine cover sizes increased a few years ago for commercial reasons, i.e. to sell more/bigger space to sponsor/s?

Yeah, in 2010...

-Lower front chassis and nose
-Narrower front wing. 75mm each side
-No beam wing

That's great! The wings have looked ridiculous ever since the current rules were introduced in 2009.Newey confirmed last week:
- Narrower front wing. 75mm each side
I'm not sure exactly how wide the wings are now, and as such how much difference it'll make, but 15 cm isn't nothing.

Wasn't this also to incorporate the f-duct?

Not sure. Still can't see the major sponsors agreeing to paintable parts of the car disappearing.

As far as I can remember, most cars had the extended engine cover even before f-duct.Wasn't this also to incorporate the f-duct?

I think the rule is older than that. 2003 or 2004 I believe. Look at the airbox on an F2002.Yeah, in 2010...

Interesting. On one hand it makes sense as the addition of a turbo charging unit requires more cooling but at the same time I would have thought the smaller displacement engine, less cylinders, lower revs and lower power output would offset this.
Good to hear about the front wings going back to close to what they were before. Small step towards the cars looking proportional again. Just need to widen/lower the rear wing and the cars will look great.

The airbox will be replaced with a turbo air inlet like in IndyCar and the first generation GP3 car:
