I was about to buy a nomex helmet skirt for my helmet and a conversation with the salesman about the use of this device in F1 was started.. Of course, we talk about the famous examples of drivers wearing this in 70s like James Hunt, Jody Scheckter, Emerson Fittipaldi and others. Also the drivers who wore in Indycars in the 80s, like Mears, Little Al and etc..

But my friend told me that the last F1 driver to wear this was Damon Hill in 1994 season. I was a little bit confused, because the risk of fire was not high in the 90´s and of course, I never saw a picture of Damon wearing this safety device.. The last driver in the "modern era" that I remeber wearing a skirt in a formula type car (because in NASCAR the skirts are still pretty common), was Tomas Scheckter in his Chip Ganassi days at Indycars. Is true that Damon really wore this in a 1994 race?

Damon wore one for a few races in 1994 after the Jos Verstappen refuelling fire at Hockenheim

I always used one, then I was told, they're not actually a good idea. I'm sure MFD will be able to explain better than me trying to remember.

I think it was a bad ideia when they wore with that "medicinal gas system", because there was oxygen in the gas and obviously was a fuel for more fire.
