It is very refreshing to see Michael give credit to David and McLaren, and also to praise the skillful passing and pace of Montoya. He gives his team the credit when he wins, and he blames himself when they lose. He admits to his mistakes. There is no finger pointing or lame excuses. These are the qualities of a true champion.

Patrick Head states that Michael was unhappy with Montoya's pass of him, but I've read nothing but complimentary comments from Michael. SpeedVision announcers told viewers to expect post race anger from Schumacher, but nothing came. Schumacher's attitude has changed from his earlier years. I'd say now he's one of the most stand-up guys in the field.

I agree - I was waiting for the petulant remarks but was impressed by MS's composure - although he did look a little cheesed off, didn't he?

Michael certainly did not look happy because he knew he made too many mistakes. That is only understandable. However, he did give credit to Coulthard, McLaren and Montoya. That is certainly the hallmark of a great champion, knowing when to accept defeat and be gracious about it.

In the first place what's there to complain about? Montoya made a legitimate yet ballsy move! Good on him! It shows mature driving by both of them to avoid accidents too. Can't say the say for Rubens!

Schumigal, My point is that so many drivers these days complain to the media when an overtaking move actually forces them to lift.

It usually sounds something like:
"That driver !, He's totally out of control. If I hadn't have lifted there would have been an accident! The stewards should fine or ban him". It's so predictable.

Only Michael will say "That is just racing..it was close, but no problem" (And if it is a problem for you...don't race)

Agree with Ross, notice the terse expression on his face and
when the camera paned to him for his questions he had that glazed look with his hand on his chin.. he was pissed. Wasent as vocal when he wins the races and refused to even hint about what his car was setup to. Both David and Nick answerd the setup questions.
Very unshumie like...

Bruce

I think he was pissed off... at himself and the questions being answered. Racefax sent the press conference report, and there were more questions from teh floor... Michael answered them all quite curtly.

It seemed they were more interested in his bad race, than DC's good race.

What was the second question put to him? Something about whether he thought he should come in and put slicks back on the car because he had a huge gap to 3rd. And then no more questions about what went wrong for him. Glad to see him giving credit to the others.

Hey, I'm a great MS fan, but I was tickled pink with Brundle's comment about his face looking like wet Monday morning. That was classic.

BTW, did you guys notice DC copying MH with the pass both MS and the Backmarker on the inside move. Oh, yes, great sportmanship by Mika. That was great to see.

Ross, I would'nt call it being humbled, rather being a good loser.

Sure MS didn't look happy...But who will after a loss?

That doesn't imply that he can't recognize the merits of JPM's move and DC win.

Schumie is a human being like all of us. He had a very bad race yesterday and didn't look good at all on track. His expressions were those of a person that had just that: An awful day. I really cannot imagine how differently he could've behaved. I mean, if he looked happy it would certainly be fake and we would know it.

That said, he reminded me of the press conference last year after Hungary.

MS did not look happy after the race, but after
winning 6 times in a row a second place is probably
not something you are very happy with.

I suppose he was more worried about the car
problems than anything else. After warm up times
he maybe was too sure of success.

I think Michael had the demeanor of any sports star who took their first loss after having so many wins.
Whilst on the podium, he took part actively in the festivities. And, look genuine in his acknoledgements to David.

I agree with ya. If ur a racer, ur more worried that ur car has problems than u losing, well he still got 6 points and there is still 14 races to go. If the car got some inexplainable problems, Ferrari are in for a deep **** for the next 14 races. One race down is not as bad as knowing that u can't even keep up with ur competitors. I dun think he was angry abuot being passed by Montoya but more towards disappointed with his own races, the pass, the spins and losing the lead twice.

WHile this race is probably a race that all Ferrari fans dread, i think it might be good as it will push the team to work harder.

HOwever, perhaps now is the time to establish no 1 in both Ferrari and Mclaren for it's no longer a 2 team race but a 3 team race. Williams can easily catch up with them in the points and may well be in contention for the WDC. If this is the case, it might benefits MS more as FErrari has shown previously that they are willing to sacrifice the no 2 driver to win the WDC. The Mclaren and Williams let the boys fight it out, which may proves detrimental as team mates may be busy stealing points from each other leaving MS to collect most points individually.

Off course Schummi was upset but he was a model of class in defeat.

Basically, he ran a great race, by backing off from a confrontation with Montoya, who had nothing to lose, he salvaged 6 points. I'm unconvinced that the bump with Montoya didn't adversely affect his car's handling for the remainder of the race it is so uncarachteristic for him to struggle in the rain, specially comparing to the likes of DC!

Had he given no ground to Zorro he would be tied with DC for the WDC

What goes up must come down, as such. He almost had as much class in defeat as Mika, almost.;)

Except when Mika pouts and drives off from the track after he's out and isn't around to see DC win (SanMarino 98, GB 99...)

"Sometimes people are good,
And they do just what they should.

But the very same people who are good sometimes,
Are the very same people who are bad sometimes.

It's funny but it's true,
It's the same for me,
isn't it the same for you?"
