I'm stealing the bus and showing up after our show in Hyannis ...
...not like those Austin jerk offs.
It's only $50.

Can we swing by your place?
Who's in ?

Sadly I am in the Northern NJ area. I just jump on Route 80 and head into PA. My condolences on the return being to Philly. I was down there last year for a work-related convention, and felt like Agent Smith trying to get out of The Matrix.

I'm looking forward to this race. Usually not keen on new ovals, but Pocono isn't that tri-oval monster that NASCAR has created. The true tri-oval circuit. And seeing as teams have tested here, it's going to be full bore from the get-go.

Also of note, because qualifying overlaps with ALMS in Lime Rock, Briscoe is going to start last.

Which driver do we reckon will have brainfade and forget each corner is different. Ie try to take the final turn as if it was the super-banked first turn?

I just coughed in your general direction.

It may also be germane to mention that I'm suffering from a debilitating virus with a five day incubation period. Luckily the duration is only 24 hours.

Best of luck.

I'm really looking forward to this one. When I was younger my dad brought me a poster of Pocono from a visit to the States, so I've always felt it's the one US track that I have a personal connection with. I've never seen a race on it though.

history

No need for that! Indycar's fantastic website has a link to this fantastic Youtube video of the fantastic last ever Pocohno 500 on the blinkin' brilliant NBC television network of America, which originally aired when Risil was -2 weeks old.

Let's see what we can learn.

Back in the 1980s, a racing series could have a logo that didn't look like racing car, or a chequered flag, or contain any design cues at all to make the poor impressionable viewer think "speed", or even "mobility".

Posted Image

Tom Sneva, who was nicknamed "The Gas Man" back when racing drivers still had nicknames, used to be a TV pundit. In the How Good Was He? stakes he comes in somewhere between Bobby Unser and Danny Sullivan, which is to say between having for your tea fish finger sandwiches or car batteries.

Here's Tom (TGM) describing Pocono's unique/derivative layout:

Posted Image
'Flat as my wife's pancakes, Charlie!'

Dale Coyne, Indycar's quintessential racerpreneur, was in 1989 still a racing car driver and not a franchisee of Dante's BBQ Pit. Here we see Dale building his relationship with that longstanding professional contact of his, Row 9 Outside.

Posted Image
And don't Burago make those little die cast scale models?

Bright orange and yellow pace truck. Can someone identify the model? Bonus points if you can also identify the paint specs, and name the year they were pressed into use during the Vietnam War.

Posted Image

Teo Fabi in the magnificent Quaker State March-Porsche, which would score a since-overlooked victory at Mid-Ohio the following week. Teo has not so much overshot his pit box as overshot the whole pit lane. He will be pulled back into place and serviced, and without brakes go on to finish fourth, on the lead lap. God bless America!

Posted Image

Defending series champion Danny Sullivan won the race in some ungodly Penske-Chevrolet hybrid. Runaway championship leader Emerson Fittipaldi, in one of those curious racing history anomalies driving a Marlboro Penske for Pat Patrick, retired for some reason.

Okay! It's someone else's turn to do details or info. What were you doing in 1989?

There was an IG Nobel award for a study that showed as a function of altitude change to width, Kansas is actually flatter than the average pancake.

1989 was two years before I was born, which is still widely regarded as a bad decision by everyone involved. Had I been born six or seven years earlier I imagine I'd've been doing the same things I did when I was knocking about in the mid-90s:

I know we like to remember JPM with fond memories in open wheelers, but this has nothing to do with Daytona last year.

Oooh good stuff. I'll try to watch that later.

I was 2-3 years old in 1989 so nothing much of note but loving every minute I'm sure.

Edit: Does Gary Gerould not age?

Watching this race at 3am in the morning on ITV (not because it was live, you understand, but because it was the only time Indycar was shown, once only, six months after the actual event had taken place, and I didn't have a VCR at the time) and thinking "How the hell am I going to get up for work tomorrow?"

Old enough to remember how bummed I was when they couldn't go there any more but that track was becoming crap for open wheel cars. Excited to watch and see real cars duking it out there
