During the 1969 Le Mans Trials (Essais préliminaires). 29-30th March Paul Hawkins ran his Lola T70 Chevrolet (SL76/142) in conjunction with Eric Broadley and, briefly, tried the car in this “long tail” form—the extension being tacked onto a cut-about “normal” tail, but not painted.
According to Autosport Hawkins was “delighted with the results”
Hawkeye set 3rd fastest time behind Stommelen’s Porsche Lang Heck 917 and Servoz-Gavin’s Matra, but I’m not sure if his time was set with or without the long tail, as he ran both.
However , following Hawkins tragic accident at Oulton Park in May, the works Lola was withdrawn and only Scuderia Filipinetti’s Lola T70 MkIIIB raced in standard tail form.
There may still be some photos of this experiment on the excellent French Motolegends site
