I agree that there is no real excuse for such a wandering calender in F1.

I think it should be two or 3 distinct seasons with holiday gaps separating. Races should be held every second weekend, with the final 4 races being double headers separated by a one week gap.

I don't begrudge the Summer break one tiny bit (people deserve their holidays) but I HATE the back-to-back races and then three weeks before the next race stuff. One week isn't enough time to finish kicking around all the little stories and incidents that arise from a race before we're plunged straight into the next one. Equally, three weeks is too long so any incidents on one of those race weekends tend to get blown out of all proportion because people get bored. It's all feast or famine.

I'm guessing the 3 week gap between Malaysia and China (as opposed to 2) means the teams and drivers can spend a couple of weeks at home in between as opposed to just 1 week (makes the going home more worthwhile).

But, I mean, they could do Malaysia and China back to back, and then a 3 week gap between China and Bahrain. That way there's still a 3 week gap but they also minimise lugging all that freight half way around the world. It's a good thing the Eco-brigade haven't picked up on the F1 calendar's logistics, there's far more scope for emissions reductions there than in costly developments to the cars themselves.

I'm sure the reason for the big gap in early '99 was that there was supposed to be an Argentinean GP that year that was cancelled.

If I recall correctly I think it was meant to be a Chinese Grand Prix at Zhuhai?

I was sure it was Argentina cancelled at the last minute but you could be right.

According to Wikipedia, you're both right. Both Argentinian and Chinese GPs were cancelled. I don't know why the Argentine GP was cancelled, but the Chinese GP was cancelled because Zhuhai track didn't meet all FIA-specifications.

the point of a break is null and void with essentially the ban on testing.

that diagram tells only part of the story given the unlimited testing that used to happen.

these breaks are just killing any sense of building climax to the season. yet another problem in the sport not being addressed

The last 25 F1 calendars.

Nice find/effort.

I did not realize that we had more doubleheader last year than this year. 3 double-header to end the season - I would have preferred 6 races spread over 12 weeks. :(

Well this gap could be really useful.
2012 and teams got to grips with their Pirellis, or maybe Pirelli got to grips with their Pirellis; no matter after the summer break tyre problems did seem less.
So, here's hoping for a repeat.
