Not that surprising when the car on pole was usually a Mercedes that did not win. However, in Hungary, the dirty side is dirtier than usual, and it is a challenge to even keep an even numbered position at the start, let alone gain any places.

What? Please show me where a Mercedes was on the pole in on of the last six Hungary races.

OK, I missed that it referred to the last 6 Hungarian races, rather than the last 6 races this season. Still, it was often the result of the circumstances. For example, Webber (P2) in 2010 did lose a position at the start, but then won the race because of the safety car and Vettel's penalty (otherwise, he would only have been 3rd). In 2008, Kovalainen (P2) was passed at the start by Massa, but he inherited the win after both Massa and Hamilton had problems. Finally, in 2009, Hamilton (P4) had the advantage of KERS, and the drivers starting from the front row both retired.

Problems for Grosjean - his car's front floor has failed a deflection test. Stewards looking into it

@ESPNF1
'Car number 08 did not comply with [the regulations] as the front floor deflected more than 5mm vertically when the load was applied' #F1

Illegal car = back of the grid? Or some special penalties for such occurrence?

If it were a Red Bull all we'd see is a 'clarification' and the item being requested to change for the next race...

So seeing as this is not a Red Bull... DQ.

Exclusion from the session - should be straight forward unless it was caused by damage to the car.

Indeed. It's a technical infringement, not a sporting one. Exclusion rather than penalty. Allowed to start from the back on whatever tyres (as they would be considered to have not participated at all in qualifying)

Don't forget that Red Bull fell foul of a technical rule at Abu Dhabi, and were exluded from qualy.

break balance problems for Rosberg

That must be just an excuse, or could you imagine that Hamilton fans would use break problems to explane why his team mate was faster? ;)

Feeling uncomfortable with brakes is different to having break balance lever broken. Thou I still haven't seen official confirmation of that.

Hamilton's winning chances have improved. If Rosberg (starting from the clean side) passes Vettel, and then backs up the field while Hamilton runs away, it should be possible for Mercedes to win.

But it wasn't a part that increased or affected performance... unlike their mechanically adjustable suspension, flexing wings/trays etc, illegal engine maps...

I dunno - carrying less fuel definitely increases performance. Regardless trying to make a difference doesn't matter. Both are technical infringements.

No I agree, what I meant was that it was inexcusable whereas RBR and Newey can cook up loads of technical BS for running bespoke illegal parts...

Hey guys! I was in the grandstand today and omg what a reaction when Hamilton beat Vettel's time right at the end. Amazing lap!

Probably the biggest cheer came when Raikkonen was up on Vettel in the first sector on his final run, but that quickly fizzled out. I think over half the grandstand is full of Kimi supporters and waving Finnish flags.

We had pretty much no idea what happened in Q2 as the TV screens broke and only came back on a minute or two into Q3.

It actually looked to be threatening rain towards the end of the session as a big dark cloud was brewing above us. It sprinkle with rain a couple of hours after but not enough to influence a race. It's forecast to be 35+ degrees tomorrow, we are going to bake in the grandstand!

Let me know how it is if he wins tomorrow.

He hasn't won there since 2005.

Just seen it, a bit miffed Seb couldn't improve by a little more, i bet if he added his 3 best sectors he would've got it, the first time all year in the dry that RB had a genuine shot at it and it wasn't to be, fair lay HAM and Mercedes, they're on a roll in qualy and Hamilton has had lots of success at this track too- hopefully the dirty side won't hinder Sebs start too badly. Alonso and Grosjean are well placed though- Kimi struggling a bit and Webber had everything that could go wrong did go wrong

They had a genuine shot at it at the Nurburgring.

Yes, but whereas you can't 100% prove whether you accidentally under-fuelled the car, you can prove that this damage was accidental.

Amazing lap from Lewis, one of his very best and there's been a few. 30 poles now, huge achievement. To be that far infront of Nico too shows he's really finding his feet in the Merc now. Just a shame he'll struggle to make the podium on these tyres and how the Merc uses them. Hope I'm wrong.

Oh pls, Nico had a problem with brake balance; LH isn't the messiah his fans are proclaiming him to be.

Very close between Seb and Lewis, I love it. IMO, Merc is the fastest car atm, but not the best. I hope they resolved their tire issues for tomorrow, we need an another entertaining race before we go on a break for sure.

why are people so surprised? Look at how many Poles MERC has gotten this season.

Seriously, it makes me question if they have even been watching all season. Both Mercs were faster than Vettel in Q1 & Q2. The Merc is a seriously fast car and it's driven by two excellent drivers. I think if Rosberg didn't have his brake balance issues today it would have been a 1-2 for Mercedes.

Can't believe how much faster the cars are compared to this time last year.

Today's pole time: 1:19.388
Last year's pole time: 1:20.953

I would put money on that a lot (not all of it but a lot) is down to the tyres and temperatures being different.

Why is it always Webber with the problems at Red Bull?

Because it's obvious it's a one-car team.

Context is amazing though. New tires+on form Red Bull+on form Seb=Impressive. After the practice sessions ppl were wondering if Kimi and Lotus were going to grab pole. Obviously over one lap the Merc is still a force, but it was never a for sure deal. Give credit where it is due.

Yeps, they were that better.
I'm a huge fan of them and would not have minded it to stay like that. A few tweaks here and there and it would jhave been spot on (withing the current accepted equality in engines and etc).

I think the truth is, the Red Bull, Lotus and Mercedes have pros and cons that cancel each other out.

The WDC will be decided by which total package was the most consistent over the season. So far it's looking like RB and Lotus with Mercedes finally coming to the party later on. I still think Seb will only just nick it in the end.

One thing I would bet on however, is that if Lewis somehow manages to win the race, Kimi will be second.

Unfortunately I didn't actually place a bet.
