It seems to me the cars (tyres) are MUCH quicker this year. Even with the loss of free DRS use in qualifying, and the minimum weight increase, the cars seem overall much quicker in q trim. I know the compounds are a step softer but Hamiltons pole lap time last year was a 1:20.9. This year it's pretty much a full 1.5 seconds faster even with the aforementioned changes. It really is astonishing! I didnt think they would find this much improvement, especially seeing as we're at the end of this set of regs. I'd guess that half of the speed is from overall improvements, and the rest the tyres? Anyone here have a more concrete idea of how much of the improvement is the tyres vs the cars themselves?

The tyres probably make a significant part of the difference. After all, this year's medium compound is similar to last year's soft (which was the option then in Hungary), and when you ignore the 2013 times set on softs (similar to 2012 super-softs), the difference is not that large.

Tires are softer and the teams have had a whole year of developments to add to the cars.
