The idea here is simply to nominate a driver you'd like to see getting a crack or another chance in a top seat for a couple of years. It doesn't necessarily have to be in F1, but in all likelihood I see F1 as being the most likely arena for this topic.

My own nomination is slightly controversial in that this guy has already had a crack at the whip (two in fact), but ever since seeing him win the Race of Champions in 2004 I took a shine to Heikki Kovalainen. I always felt (or wanted to believe) that he had what it takes, but never fully got to make the best of his lot. Yes, he had his first season with Renault and then a couple as Lewis's team mate at McLaren where he won the Hungarian GP, so you could reasonably argue that he's had his chances, and at 31 he's in the latter part of his F1 career, but what the heck, I still really like the guy - he just comes across as one of those charismatic personalities for whom the glass is half full not half empty, even though I am not convinced about his own self confidence which sets the champions apart from the rest, but as he has matured I wonder how he would fit in to a team like Lotus or RedBull nowadays. I'd love to see him end his career with a couple of years in a championship contending team.

Other drivers do spring to mind of course, but one nomination is good enough to kick off with. So, have at it.

None - all the drivers in top cars who didn't stay there for long all proved they should've never been there in the first place.

You should try reading the OP again.

Hulkenberg for me.

Hulkenberg

Bianchi & Magnussen in the Long-Run (Bottas maybe?).

Maybe Ricciardo.

EDIT: @OT I was one of the Heikki fans too. I would even say he would be fast enough but he didn't have the mental stability to be at the top (too much pressure). Maybe if he can bring that, who knows. There are others like Glock which are kind of similar. Good and decent driver but just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Heidfeld. I think he could have mounted a Webber 2010 title challenge if he was in a top car. Even in one of his poor seasons, 2008, he was only 15 points off Kubica.

Hulkenberg is the only one right now.

BTW, Massa and Grosjean should get out.

Lewis Hamilton. Not saying that the Merc is bad, but I would love to see him in a dominant car like 2011's Red Bull.

The old man, Michael Schumacher.

He still has it...

It would be like Fangio all over again.

Not another, but finally a one! With the same technical and tactic support as his teammate... Alguersuari, Sutil...

Imagine if Kovalainen had been at Enstone the last couple seasons rather than Grosjean. A ton more WCC points and most likely an actual title sponsor as well. For whatever reason, sponsors won't touch the team with a 10 foot pole. They have no confidence in the team despite Kimi almost always being in top 3 WDC. I believe it's that Grosjean is far and away the least reliable driver in F1.

I'd like to see Di Resta (as he's improved a great deal from last year and outclassing Sutil), Hulkenberg (as he seems to be dragging that naff Sauber to decent places) and Maldonado (as he's a race winner and seems to have calmed down a great deal from last year) in top seats.

Alonso deserves at least one more season in a car capable of fighting at the front every weekend.

More seriously: Nico Hulkenberg, and I would like to see what a guy like Scott Dixon could do.

I would have liked to see Montoya get another F1 opportunity a few years ago, but as of now I would like to see him in a better NASCAR team.

Also, I wonder if Christian Klien would be worth another look.

No, the question is about somebody getting a "top drive", not "topping someone with his drive", (ie, his girlfriend).

He was never in a "top car" but I would like to see Koba back too. Thing is, he's already a bit forgotten. The F1 fraternity is cruel like that.
I can also agree now, that it would be interesting to see what DiResta could do in better machinery. I used to rate Sutil higher, but I think Di Resta might be one notch better now.

Another crack: Juan Pablo Montoya, Frentzen

Personally, if Kimi moves or Romain loses his seat, I would love to see Sutil at Lotus. Just to see the Christmas party involving him and Eric Lux :rotfl:

I want Nick Heidfeld take the Red Bull seat....

 F1 needs more beards and manly manliness like Nick has got :|

...

Another crack: ... Frentzen

If he were younger MOST DEFINITLY YES... but I think he is too old and out of shape for this now

I think Hulkenberg definitely deserves a go, and will have it sooner or later. He's my nomination clearly.

Heidfeld and Glock should've had one, but Heidfeld ran out of performance whilst still in F1 after years and years of quietly impressive seasons in midfield, and Glock got harshly cutten off after driving expertly shitboxes. Neither will go back.

As for drivers that were never given any chance at all? Álvaro Parente.

Koba, Ricciardo, Hulk, Bottas, Bianchi. In that order.

Kubica if he were not hurt would be choice #1.

As for who is in a 'top seat' Massa and Grosjean are eminently replaceable.

diResta to Ferrari
Magnussen to FI
Koba to FI
JEV to replace Rosberg
Costa + Sainz to TR
Kimi + Ric to RBR
Kubica to Lotus

retire Hulk, Sutil, Rosberg, Vettel

(would not be fair to the drivers, but maybe watching F1 in Germany´s free TV could be bearable again....)

That can be said also about british broadcasters where is every 3rd minute a mention about DiResta... More than champions Jenson and Lewis...
