It certainly would not be allowed by the FIA now, but in the 1980's and 1990's when a new circuit was used in the Formula One World Championship or a circuit was radically modified, a special accimatisation practice sessions would be held. Often these were on the Thursday before Official Practice commenced on the Friday.

So far I have identified the following:

1981 Caesars Palace (Las Vegas) Autocourse Annual state Wednesday am session (time period?)
1982 Detroit (Detroit) Autocourse Annual state originally a Thursday 'familiarisation' practice session was arranged, but this was abandoned due to track safety issues.

1984 Dallas (Dallas) Thursday one time session known 11.30am to 12.30pm
1985 Australian (Adelaide) Autocourse Annual state Thursday pm session (time period?)
1986 Hungarian (Hungaroring) Autocourse Annual state Thursday two hour session
1986 Mexican (Mexico City) Autocourse Annual state Thursday two- two hour sessions
1992 South African (Kyalami) Thursday two sessions
1993 European (Donington Park) two sessions
1994 Pacific (TI Aida) Thursday (one session known of)
1995 Argentine (Buenos Aires) Thursday two sessions, 11.00am to 12.00am, 1.30pm to 2.30pm
1995 San Marino (Imola) Thursday two sessions
1995 European (Nurburgring) Thursday (one session known of)
1995 Australian (Melbourne) Thursday two sessions
1997 Austrian (Osterreichring) Thursay two sessions

Did any other Grand Prix's have acclimatisation sessions? Also has anyone got any times from these sessions?

Apologies for a one-fingered typing error on my part, of course it was 1996 (first year of GP at Melbourne)

For all the new Grands Prix of the last 15 years, there were never such sessions, I believe. Which I found strange, since they were something of a fixture for new races during the 80s and 90s, right?

I'd have thought it was a good idea with any new track or corner, if only to help the tarmac bed-in somewhat.

Way back when, before allowing a new GP into the championship calendar the FIA required the organisers to demonstrate their competence by running a non-championship GP first, eg Morocco. The exception was the 1959 US GP as Sebring had successfully run the 12 hour race for several years. Nowadays I believe they simply pay Bernie's organisation to run it for them.

Further research has identified one more Grand Prix that had acclimisation sessions:

1990 Brazilian (Interlagos) Autocourse Annual state two one hour sessions held Thursday: am (wet) bpt M.Donnolly, pm (dry) bpt A.Senna

The drivers now get weeks of acclimatisation on the simulators, no need to even see the circuit.

An acclimatisation session was held before the 1991 Spanish Grand Prix as well, which was held at the Montmeló circuit for the very first time.

Yet another acclimatisation session took place at Kyalami in 1992 when the revised circuit was opened. The times of that session would be certainly interesting because this was the only time where the repainted Coloni C4 ran in Andrea Moda colours driven by Alex Caffi. Interestingly enough the team had a second car there for Enrico Bertaggia but there wasn't enough time and/our spare parts to prepare it for the session. So it looks as though Bertaggia never took the track.

Two by one hour acclimatisation sessions took place at 1992 South African Grand Prix, held on 27th February..

At both sessions N.Mansell recorded best time, with times of 1'18.850" (17 laps completed)  & 1'17.107" (12 laps completed).

The only recorded time by a Andrea Moda Formula car was  at second session with No 34 Alex Caffi recording a time of 55'03.034" (completed 1 lap). . This suggests Caffi spent most of the lap time in pit lane.

Both sessions had 30 drivers recording a time

Any other times from those sessions when being held at Kyalami?

Or any other times from the different years when those Acclimatisation Sessions were held?

Excluding already mentioned Las Vegas 1981 of course.

In the season of 1991, I think that Magny-Cours and Silverstone had also those sessions as well (Magny-Cours for a completely new track and Silverstone for their much changed circuit along with their respective tyre test preceeding it.)

Acclimatisation session times I really would like to see include:

1978 Argentine

1979 Brazilian. This is mentioned in book Memories of James Hunt by Christopher Hilton (but not times shown)

1984 United States (Dallas) believe 3 lap pre-race session after track repairs overnight (not strictly an acclimatisation session, but would be interesting to see)

1984 Portuguese

1985 South African ??? (not sure if an acclimatisation session took place)

1985 Australian

1986 Spanish

1986 Hungarian

1986 Mexican

1987 Japanese

1991 French

There was no acclimatisation session at Kyalami in 1985, just the regular practice and qualifying sessions on Thursday. Acclimatisation session times for the other 1985 and '86 races have already been posted, see posts #15 and #18.

Apologies to Michael.

I had seen his times for 1985 & 1986 acclimatisation sessions. Very welcombe

Also good to have confirmation on 1985 South African GP

Oh...

It was just a typing error, that's all.

I'll fix it right away because the real time was 1'27'471.

After a quite hard searching, I have managed to find out 1987 Japanese Grand Prix Thursday Practice times entirely when as of almost to this fine day, I only had of those times partially up to the Nelson Piquet's time.

Meaning ten fastest times, of course.

However, here are the times for this session which Nigel Mansell did clock away fastest and it promised so much before the inenvitable accident:

1987

29 Oct, Suzuka

1 Mansell 1.43.305

2 Senna 1.43.550
3 Prost 1.44.254
4 Berger 1.44.509
5 Alboreto 1.46.149
6 Johansson 1.46.192
7 Nakajima 1.46.734
8 Fabi 1.47.017
9 Boutsen 1.47.017 (Boutsen had a tie with Fabi, but Boutsen's second fastest time were only a bit slower by time of 1.47.181 which he then dropped behind Fabi because Fabi's own second fastest time were only marginally faster than Boutsen's own.)
10 Piquet 1.47.917
11 Patrese 1.48.380

12 Brundle 1.50.025
13 Warwick 1.50.504
14 Capelli 1.50.593
15 Nannini 1.50.633

19 Caffi 1.52.879
20 Streiff 1.53.027
21 Arnoux 1.53.370
22 Ghinzani 1.53.459
23 Cheever 1.54.549
24 Moreno 1.53.668

After some break, I have found the complete lap times for the 1981 Brazilian Grand Prix Acclimatisation Session and even though some sources have labelled this to being held in Thursday, it actually was being held unless I'm not very badly mistaken, in Wednesday rather than Thursday even though the time setting had some strong-arm-words-wrestling with FISA and FOCA with the organizers of the event.

I think that this session was only one to be held.

It was 2 hour long session and it was supposed to be held in 14-16 o' clock, but it was postponed either to be concluded in 17.30 o' clock or approximately just begin in 17.30 o' clock and then to be concluded in the late evenings in 19.30 o' clock after the shenaningans between the organizers, FISA, FOCA and also by then with Ricardo Londono-Bridge had been temporarily dealed with likely temporarily mutual agreement of things.

Even though right after this session now the late Senor Londono-Bridge actually never drive in any Grand Prix car again.

Also one who almost never drive in any Grand Prix again right after this session (At least in anger, even though he did later drive on exhibitions and also when his legs really were cured and mend with enough to him to had been reconsidered to return for one final time, I think it was in 1982 and he was enlisted to drive Ligier as a very last-ditch effort when one certain US driver did have some vocal displeasure with Monsieur Ligier with that one point of the season.) was Jean-Pierre Jabouille who had too bad leg pains and had to give up trying to drive the whole weekend and that was when Jean-Pierre Jarier was on hand to drive even though he maybe didn't have any time in first Official Practice session because of the normal paperwork issues when replacing another driver even back then.

So, here are the times:

1981

Mar 25, Jacarepagua

1 Reutemann 1'37.486

2 Prost 1'38.421

7 Laffite 1'39.851

8 Mansell 1'40.088

9 Cheever 1'40.307

10 Jarier 1'40.406

11 Lammers 1'40.671

12 Pironi 1'40.709

13 de Cesaris 1'41.089

14 Rosberg 1'41.207

15 Tambay 1'41.252

16 Watson 1'41.459

17 Jones 1'41.464

18 Villeneuve 1'41.464 (Jones and Villeneuve had a tie with the best time, but Jones had a better second fastest lap than Villeneuve.)

21 Arnoux 1'42.087

After quite a long search, I have also found 1979 Brazilian Grand Prix Thursday Practice Session times.

Even though sometimes it was said that it was requested to be held a day earlier, in Wednesday or day later, very early on the Friday morning, but it was postponed to be held firmly on Thursday because of the adamant FISA and FOCA.

All drivers didn't drive in this session and I will mention them when their time is on due.

However here are the times:

1979

Grande Premio do Brasil Treino Extra-Oficial

Feb 1, Interlagos

1 Reutemann 2'25''490

2 Laffite 2'25''900

3 Andretti 2'26 exact

4 Depailler 2'26''250

5 Villeneuve 2'27''560

6 Pironi 2'28''250

7 Jabouille 2'29''310

8 Regazzoni 2'29''370

9 Patrese 2'29''780

10 Jones 2'30''020

11 Tambay 2'30''120

12 Fittipaldi 2'30''350 (This time lap was done with car model of F5-A and it was older model since Fittipaldi also had a F6 which of course was a new model of the team. Fittipaldi did drove a time of 2'30''570 with F6.)

13 Mass 2'30''420

14 Lauda 2'30''570

15 Watson 2'31''120

16 Scheckter 2'31''280

17 de Angelis 2'31''850

20 Jarier 2'34''330

21 Lammers 2'35''130

22 Daly 2'37''050

23 Merzario 2'40''420

24 Piquet 2'43''570

25 Hunt nt (Hunt maybe did try the car at least once on track, but it could have that he didn't even that. If he did so or even more try-out laps, then they were not registered if he just drove back to the pits. Maybe he didn't drive at all in this session.)

To some of us the Acclimatisation time are interesting, as they were not generally shown in reports of Grand Prix's at the time.

However the 1979 Brazilian GP acclimatisation times were published in Grand Prix International magazine and with exception of times for Laffite, Depailler, Jones, Arnoux, Daly,  all drivers have slightly different times., For example:  Reutemann (2'25.49") GPI 2'25.46", Andretti (2'26.00") 2'26.03" GPI, Piquet (2'43.57") GPI 2'43.47"

Hopefully, the revised times shown above taken from the official published times

3 Rebaque 1'38.735

4 Patrese 1'38.961

5 de Angelis 1'39.717

6 Andretti 1'39.823

7 Laffite 1'39.851

8 Mansell 1'40.088

9 Cheever 1'40.307

10 Jarier 1'40.406

11 Lammers 1'40.671

12 Pironi 1'40.709

13 de Cesaris 1'41.089

14 Rosberg 1'41.207

15 Tambay 1'41.252

16 Watson 1'41.459

17 Jones 1'41.464

18 Villeneuve 1'41.464 (Jones and Villeneuve had a tie with the best time, but Jones had a better second fastest lap than Villeneuve.)

19 Londono-Bridge 1'41.776

20 Piquet 1'42.012

21 Arnoux 1'42.087

22 Daly 1'42.324

23 Giacomelli 1'42.364

24 Serra 1'42.453

25 Angel Guerra 1'42.847

26 Jabouille 1'43.044

27 Stohr 1'43.118

28 Gabbiani 1'43.645

29 Zunino 1'44.554

30 Salazar 1'48.774

This Acclimatisation session is of interest as it has Riccardo Londono-Bridge taking part in his only Grand Prix appearance.

I got in touch with Charlie Whiting in 2014, to ask if he could obtain the acclimatisation times and he sent me these after he had approached the promoter of the GP, who was in charge in 1981.

The list he sent has a few different times:

N.Mansell 1'40.088" , (list I have 1'40.018") , J.Watson 1'41.459" (list I have 1'41.458") G.Villeneuve 1'41.464" (list I have 1'41.613") Grand Prix International magazine also published times but only to two decimal places, as did MMM Sport, time shown for Villeneuve is 1'41.71", which 'muddies the water somewhat', J-P Jabouille 1'43.044" (list I have 1'43.055").

As regard to Riccardo Londono-Bridge time of 1'41.776" (19th fastest) that I think is another story. Autocourse Annual report states "Riccardo Londono-Bridge who drove the Ensign on Wednesday. That proved to be a disastrous affair when, after a few slow laps, the Columbian managed to hit Rosberg's Fittipaldi. To everyone's relief it was discovered that the novice did not have a suitable licence." . Marc Surer look over car and competed in all practice sessions, and came 4th in the GP.

About 1979 Brazilian Grand Prix Acclimatisation times:

I have taken those previously written times from the following Brazilian magazines:

Folha de Sao Paulo

Folha de Manha

Folha de Noite

There were some other magazines too from the another countries, but they didn't show all the times and most of them when they did wrote about the results, they were errorneously staten.

So far you have discovered quite a number of acclimatisation session times that have remained hidden for many year's. Well done

Thank You very much!

However...

What about 1984 Dallas Grand Prix weekend?

I have heard two different sessions to have been held on that particular race weekend.

Normal (Or at least the most normal session anyway on that weekend and before the track started to break.) Acclimatisation Session

on Thursday and also with so-called Mini-Warm Up Session on Sunday, because with the issues of the track and starting time which was compromised.

Mini-Warm Up Session either had 3 or approximately 4 laps (Those 4 laps may or may not have included timeless in-lap and out-lap combined.) which drivers had before going in to the dummy grid as to a rare occasion for to preserve already breaking, patched and battered track. It may also have been an entirely timeless session.

Renault drivers Derek Warwick and Patrick Tambay were the fastest drivers either the both of these sessions or only for a one session.

I do have some times from that weekend, but I'm not sure about them.

As of which session those times can belong to, that is.

With eleven o'clock looming that news was not well received by Bernie Ecclestone. No, the final arrangement would be three warm-up laps followed immediately by the countdown to the start."

I do not know if the three laps were timed.

The drivers now get weeks of acclimatisation on the simulators, no need to even see the circuit.

Not on new circuits. In recent years  they really have needed them however.

On current circuits there is a huge amount of info. But some of the circuits that have came and gone were brand new with little or no info apart from lengths and pictures.

That's interesting - does the official timing sheet also say Teo Fabi? All the US newspapers mentioned Teo, but I took it to be an understandable mistake.

The Olivetti-Longines timing sheet does say No 2 (Brabham-BMW  BT53  T.Fabi (no first name mentioned) on Acclimatisation sheet for July 5.

For Timing sheets both untimed and timed classification, plus race they all state no 2 (Brabham -BMW BT53) C.Fabi. That would be of course Corrado Fabi.

Of course the name shown for entry No 2 Brabham BT53 on acclimatisation sheet could have course been a mistake on timing sheet.

A mystery indeed !!

Teo was racing in the Indycar race at Cleveland that weekend, over 1,100 miles from Dallas. I suppose it’s logistically possible for him to have been in Dallas on the Thursday before going off to Cleveland (as there was only one day of qualifying at Cleveland), but what would have been the point? Unnecessary hassle for Teo, and surely Brabham would have wanted to give Corrado as much time in the car as possible. There’s certainly no mention of Teo in the Autosport report.
