Could someone tell me what spectating is like at the COTA. Having only watched it on television, it looks great, but the general spectator areas seem some distance from the track, and you have 10ft high catch fencing to look over (or through). Are the grandstands a good option?

I also ask this from an amateur photographer perspective. Can you get good photo's with a mid-size zoom lense (300mm).

sat in turn 15 grandstand, about 1/2 way up. You can take good varied distance shots of the cars as they go from turn 12 to 15. For me 300 mm seemed about right (on canon rebel, so about 450MM if you have full frame sensor). A lot of viewing locations are quite good; the junior engineer at Tilke who laid that part out took the job seriously. The great spots are not unlimited so go early if u are GA.

300mm should do great

also make sure you bring some wide angles and spend some $$ to get on the watch tower.  The Star-spangled track color is quite something to catch
