John was (and possibly still is) a Dentist from the Midlands with a very dry sense of humour. I remember John telling us in the bar at Snetterton one evening that he and his wife (Janet?) moved onto a 'Young Executives' estate and were invited round for dinner and drinks etc with all these, I forget the word he used but it wasn't too complementary.
When it was their turn they dressed in Teddy Boy outfits and played Rockabilly all night, which I think got them out of the 'inner circle' of the estate.
John also had a warning for the unwary - 'Don't try to tune the ports on a Yamaha barrel when you've just got home from the pub!

I'd say it could be a TD2B Yamaha in a special frame Graham.

Don't think it's a TD2, they had the chain on the opposite side ( r/h side ) could be a TD3 though but the frame is not Yamaha.

Hi guys, yes it was frame & front brake I thought not "standard" Yamaha, he went well on it though finishing 6th in first 250 race behind, 1st Peter Weale 2nd Larry McMahon, 3rd Barry Woodland, 4th John Springhall, 5th Alex Taylor.

I may be wrong but I think no101 may be a BDS 250, a two stroke twin possibly based on Yamaha built by Bill Day with input from John Carpenter(Mistral Engineering) raced at MGP by Bill and later by Cliff Gobell, anybody throw anymore light on this ??

I knew a couple of lads when I was racing who wouldnt have any names showing on anything unless they were getting paid for it, could be that?

I think you're right Mick. From what I remember Colin Aldridge raced a BDS in 74ish and that seat looks very similar to the one I recall on that bike. I'm pretty certain that it used a set of home made cases with Yamaha crank and top end (TD2?) and had an Albion 5 speed gearbox with chain primary drive.

I remember Bill having an engine that had the front crankcases of a TD2 (containing crank with cylinders etc) and a separate gearbox mounted in quite a low profile frame. There again I remember many things, sometimes even my name.
Posted 12 December 2013 - 10:03
The Kieran Lewis photo looks like a low profile if you compare it to the John Stone picture.
So probably a Bill Day/John Carpenter built bike with part Yamaha engine! how much more interesting was it back then than it is today....... technically any how.
