Seem it is David Lane with his AC-Bristol and Ed Rahal with the Arnolt-(Bristol or Chevrolet?), no idea for the Porsche who had lost his rollbar .

It must be in 1958, an airfield in Florida ? New Smyrna Beach ?

This is not an easy one, since the SCCA magazine nor the national press covered the event.

Where: St Lucie County Airport at Fort Pierce, Florida
What: the Sam Collier Memorial Trophy 4 Hours
When: November 17, 1957

The photo was taken at a corner called Porsche's Lament. The AC/Bristol driver is the still relatively unknown Lucky Casner. The red car is Edmund Rahal's Arnolt/Chevy. Caught in the middle is the Porsche 550RS of John Cochran, of whom little is known. He only raced in 1956 and 1957, and according to Nedra Ware [also a Porsche entrant at Fort Pierce] Cochran was a New York broadcaster [although the entry list shows him Miami-based].

Thanks again, Jerry, for bringing these neat little things to our table...

Willem, of course, is to be thanked also.

Did you check whether he is/was the father of Jay Cochran (b. 1963)?

In his biography Jay Cochran is quoted as follows:

“I have always had a passion for racing. My dad was an amateur racer back before I was born. I lived near Bridgehampton, and my cousin raced, so I have always been around the sport."

John and Jay Cochran may well have been related. Here is another shot of the Cochran Porsche 550RS at Fort Pierce in 1957. Can't make out the logo on the side of the car, but it looks like a toad.

Two other entries at Fort Pierce in 1957, both from Jacksonville. The #15 is the Mickey Mouse Special of Peter Laffe. The car had a VW chassis, a Porsche engine and a Devin body. The second team car is Jim Harcum's 1.1-liter Bobtail Cooper/Climax.

Neat photo Jerry. Is that possibly a Cord or a Graham cut off at the right of the photo?

Something much more mundane: a Renault 4CV raced in HM by Bob Hacker of Jacksonville.
The X meant Hacker was a novice driver.

Brian: It looks like a Cord but it was a Renault 4CV parked next to the Devin and the Cooper..

Thanks Bill

But I still can't tell if it's a MkI or MkII bobtail, ie, has it got the F3-type wheels of the earlier model or the F2-type of the later?

David,

This image of the same Bobtail Cooper, taken in 1958 at a still undetermined location, may give a better view of the type of wheels it used.

Enhancing doesn't male the wheels any clearer; in fact, the process darkens the wheels which are definitely "spoked" when you enlarge the saved image

I'd done that exercise, and although they look more like 1956-type than 1955, it's hard to be certain

The 'spokes' definitely look to be wide and rounded - e.g. F2/Minilite style.

Agreed.

Too many airport racing facilities that look like this to be certain where it is. Mansfield LA was the only one I saw in this era.

Frank,

I doubt it is Mansfield, Louisiana. Yes, Mansfield was wide but the photographer, Porsche racer Bob Bellows, never went there. Being from Florida, he raced primarily at courses in Florida, Georgia and Alabama. Since most of them are so featureless, it is hard to determine where this photo was taken.

Thanks Peter and Frank

You guys obviously have better imaging software (or better eyes!) than mine

No doubt these wheels are of the 1956-type

Hello, everyone -  Back to the photo that includes the 550 Spyder of John Cochran, which also raced it at Nassau in 1957 as #69.  Jean Seidel also drove this car at Nassau.

Key question:  Does anyone know the chassis number of this 550, and who owned it previously/subsequently?   Along with a reply to this site,  please send a message to linsky911@comcast.net

Happy Holidays to all.

Do you mean Jean Speidel? She was a girl driver from Miami and raced a 1600S at Fort Pierce in 1957. I think her family was in the watchband manufacturing business.
