People keep asking for rules to be relaxed in various areas so that there can be much more diversity. But it will never be how they would like. The truth is that, even if there were diversity at the beginning, it would very quickly converge to the one that seems to work the best. There will never be multiple solutions that are all equally good. There will be one that is perceived to be better and every team that doesn't have it will adopt it very quickly.

Also it would be a colossal waste of money.

That's very well done. Impressive and sad all at once.

I want my ears to bleed.

one of my favorite race cars of all time: Mazda 787B. Loud and unpleasant.

I saw the Porsche 917, Ferrari 512S and Matra-Simca MS650 live at Spa in 1970, and the Montréal GP in 1998. Both races sounded awesome.....

Love it. Goes to show that so much has been taken from us. (Engine and sound wise seen)

Reading some of the positive comments from late 2013 are quite funny. All the "don't worry, they'll be fine come testing" really didn't age well 😂

Honestly, I don't understand why people think those V10 and V8s pre 2014 sounded amazing. It doesn't sounds good to me. Even at the track I wasn't impressed. I've got no problem with the sound they make now tbf and honestly think they sound nicer if anything. It was just a massively high pitched scream

It sounded as if it were delivered to the track from another planet. Chilling. In a good way.

Too loud is never good. Makes the sport unsuitable for small children, wives, and other semi-willing attendees. Drowns out the PA. Leaves you deaf at the end of the day. Hurts physically. Can do long-term damage.

The Matra V12 was a beautiful sound, the Mazda rotary an entertaining one (strangers would smile at each other as it passed). Both were on the margin of loudness. The V10s were also a pleasant sound but intolerably loud, much like the V16 BRM.

Thanks a lot for sharing. Maybe if you weren’t watching F1 back then it doesn’t have the same impact, but for me, that sound adds a whole new dimension of intensity. There were cars… and then there were F1 cars.

For most viewers, the sound that matters come from speakers. I am sure that some of the "it was better before" opinions from people that has heard both a V7+ engine come from the sound pressure, but I think an important part of that is being ignored: On the track you hear what you see! When three cars dive into a corner, you can hear the sound of each one of them individually, perfectly synced to what you se. Ears and brains does that, they can focus on individual sources of noise. On our screens that does not happen very often, instead we get a carpet of sound that (unless it is in ca view) does very little for the immersion.

The broadcasters could easily improve in that area.

I can see that point with the V8s, to some extent, but the V10s are pure music in person. The sound in that video doesn't really do them justice.

The engines make a huge difference to the trackside spectator! As an example, I've been fortunate enough to get to the Goodwood Festival of Speed a handful of times times and you get a great comparison between all sorts of motors. One of the F1 cars that gives the extra wow factor is the 1991 McLaren with the Honda V12. It's different gravy altogether! That and any of the Ferrari V12s get a lot of crowd attention.
The V10s are great for goosebumps as well. V8s not so much, sound a bit harsh for my liking, but some don't mind them.

The newer F1 cars are impressive machines but always get the same crowd chatter "just not the same with those new engines"

Love the wail of V10's on the TV, V8s were OK too...but they didn't make attending the Grand Prix's fun after the initial impression wears off.  What I appreciate about the new engines is your wife is accepting of coming along and you can take the kids.

F355 sounds pretty good even on stock pipes.

I've lamented the loss of the visceral experience of V10s too many times on these forums, but I'll say it again. With the current V6 hybrids, we are getting engines that are both relatively quiet AND have absolute garbage quality. There are plenty of examples of cars that are "quiet" that sound nice, my favorite being the Aston Martin/Lola LMP1 car with its shrieking V12 that was muted by some mufflers so that it was a lovely note but was easily drowned out when alongside unmuffled cars.

More relevant to this conversation is the sound of the current IndyCar engine. It is also a turbocharged V6, but it's just a much more pleasing sound (IMO) than current F1 motors. I suppose it's exhaust/turbo architecture (and the slightly larger displacement) that makes the difference, but it is a sign that it's possible to take a small displacement turbo V6 and make something that doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner-

Much larger turbine on the F1 cars (requiring the MGU-H to spin it up to stop the lag).

Much less use of the wastegate (again MGU-H doing a job)

Single turbo vs twin turbo

Single exhaust outlet vs twin outlets

A number of differences.

On TV, the current cars are fine. You don't really notice a difference. In person there is a significant difference, particularly if they aren't driving straight passed you on full throttle, or away from you. The V10s could be heard for miles and built anticipation. The V6s are out of earshot after a turn or two.
