Does anyone know the story behind Niki Lauda's change of mount for this event? It's a matter of record that he raced the #18 car in gold paintwork, but photos also show him in a fully-liveried black #20 machine. Was this in practice, did the car fail, or was there some other reason? Any clarification welcomed!

Far as I know he raced with a 18 gold coloured Merc. Here we have a wonderful pic of him racing against James Hunt (I was searching for a pic of Hunt in this event for many years, but I only found it last week in a Facebook page):

I would like to see more pictures of Hunt racing in this event.. Lovely pic of him racing with his helmet from Mclaren days, still with the nomex skirt, and Wolf Racing overalls.

Sadly when you go search something about this race, you ONLY see pictures of Senna.

Sorry I can't contribute anything to the subject, but that foto looks like the Lauda car has been photoshopped into it.

Yes, it is suspicious that Hunt's car is so dirty, while Niki's is pristine.

Or maybe the shot was taken last year at Blackbushe airport.... :p

I think you're right, the shadows are wrong on Lauda's car.

Not sure I can help much with pics of Hunt racing the 190E 2.3-16, but you can see the car in the pit lane at

It would be interesting to know where the "racing" pic of Lauda and Hunt was photoshopped from, as I haven't seen that image before.

As far as Lauda in the black #20 car is concerned, here's a pic

So what went on there...?

Jon, I'm sure the Swiss weekly "Motorsport aktuell" covered this in detail, but when I went to check my collection, this exact issue was missing from it!! I wonder if I misfiled it, or if it went AWOL... :(

In the link that Jon posted it says that Senna took over Fittipaldi's entry.  If true that explains how he managed to race in such exalted company.

And the results that Rob posted shows Elio de Angelis in car no 20.  So the original question is as much a mystery as ever

By the way, that race was broadcasted and the copy of that broadcast still exists.

There is a photo gallery at this site which shows Lauda in a black #20 and also what appears to be a Silver #16, or maybe #18. That one might be gold instead of silver, but it doesn't really look like it.

Edit: Found this video of the race, dubbed in German and Senna centeric, but at the 3:29 mark you can see Lauda.
