Straightforward title, what were the longest official odds offered for the eventual winner of a race or championship?

Button for champion in 2009 must have been huge in February that year.

When did betting become widely available for Grand Prix racing?  Late nineties?

There is no such thing as "Official" odds.  Odds are quoted by each bookmaker independently.

I think what you are looking for is the "average starting price" odds.  But I don't know if anyone has ever carried out the exercise for motor sport as the market is scattered.

I would think the longest odds on a world champion would either be Rosberg or Button

Back in 1973 the 'bookies' were offering odds on the British GP winner....I think Peter Revson's odds were something like 15/1 or 20/1 (I can't remember now the exact figure).  I know I thought at the time that if I  had a few quid spare it would have been worth a tilt...however I didn't...and thanks to Mr Scheckter Revie duly won!

Scheckter at Argentina 1977?  Ludovico Scarfiotti Italy 1966?  Jean-Pierre Beltoise Monaco 1972?  Brambles in Austria, Aboretto at Las Vegas, Jones in Austria, Panis in Monaco?

As I remember, 1973 was the first year for off-course betting on F1. One of the big UK firms (can't remember which) had made a big hoo-ha about how they were moving into F1, and odds started being quoted in Autosport. After Clay Regazzoni's excellent performance in the Argentine GP, I thought he was a good bet for the Brazilian GP, so went down to my local branch and tried to place a bet. They knew nothing about their firm's new inititiative, so the manager was summoned. It rang a vague bell with him, but he'd no idea what the odds should be. I told him what Autosport had published, and he accepted my bet at those odds. Sadly, Clay failed to deliver, and I've never been in a betting shop since.

I admire your optimism Tim, putting money on a runner from the Bourne stable!  I would probably have done the same but was just too young in 1973.  In 1979 Ladbrokes offered 16/1 for a Regazzoni win at Silverstone and I splashed out a whole £1. It paid for the Grand Prix weekend, but I don't think I ever backed another winner.

Don't know about "widely" but the Brooklands bookies presumably ran books on the British GP in 1926 and I doubt that was a new idea.

I put on a £1 each way for a friend for Vettel at Monza 08 at odds of 100/1.

I even gave him the betting slip after the race ........

Bookies were a part of Brooklands from the beginning, but in those days 'long odds' was apparently 10/1 - although that's quoted in the context of a 1914 '100 Short' Handicap (Boddy: Brooklands p57).

I've felt guilty ever since, John. If I hadn't put the mockers on him by placing my bet, Clay would undoubtedly have won. ;)

I bet Panis got good odds Monaco 96 or Vettel Monza 08 pre weekend.

What kind of title odds did Alonso have in 2005 pre season? But yeah, Button prob the biggest but as soon as they got to the first test the odds on Button slashed. I actually put a tenner on Vettel pre season in 09 and got 16/1. He came 2nd then won it every year for next 4 years. Not bet on a WDC since.

This must be the highest, unless Button pre-season 2009.

Otherwise I'd have said Coulthard Monaco 2002. He was 20-25 to 1. I remember it because for some reason I was convinced he was going to win and it was the only time I'd considered betting on a race.

Is it possible to get odds on Lewis Hamilton  spouting anything other than self dramatising  psychobabble  this year?

The best advice I can give about betting on horses is don't bet on horses.

Indeed, or anything else.
