It seems he walked into the middle of the motorway from what the report says.
Shocking news, RIP.

Yes, looks like suicide.
Very sad.

Reading the bit about saying the man entered the carriageway, for some reason I thought it meant he basically drove back onto the carriageway and the car was hit by a lorry. Seemingly that wasn't the case, and he himself got out and walked onto the carriageway.
RIP
Feel sorry for the lorry driver, it may not have been his fault as such (if someone wants to die, they'll find a way), but he'll have that in his mind for the rest of his life.

If it was a suicide by walking in to a motorway, then he was a **** for doing that. Just think about the person(s) who would have hit him. They'll never get over it.
That's a big IF of course, only if he did the above.

Oh, my. I didn't follow his movements much after his departure from F1, but from the Autosport obit it seems he enjoyed considerable success in sports cars. Damn shame, especially considering the apparent circumstances. Strength and condolences to his family and friends.

****, terrible news. He achieved a lot in F1, whatever happened later on. Thoughts are with his family and friends.

I think that is unfair.
Anyone taking their own life is unlikely to be in a state of mind where they would give consideration to such matters.
I would instead be sympathetic he was in such despair he thought this was the only option.

Condolences. It's weird coincidence that it's been 20 years since he got hit with a wheel during Imola 94 race.

Very sad news, especially as the Spygate affair is well in the past, and he'd rebuilt his career with JRM. If the depression that led to this decision was latent and not caused solely by the stresses of the scandal, perhaps it's an explanation for why he became dissatisfied at Ferrari despite the team's success? Either way, R.I.P.

Don't descend into Twitter-esque anti-suicide rants, if that is even the cause. To reach that stage a person goes beyond the point of no return, mentally. The final minutes are sheer hell for the person, they are beyond reasoning with when they have crossed the psychological barrier.
Never met the guy, but that is a very sad and lonely way to die.

I hope that the driver who hit him and the other people witnessing the incident somehow aren't traumatized for life because of his actions.

You make it sound like someone in such a state of mind is thinking clearly.

The point is a perfectly fair one as are the ones of a similar nature in this thread.
Thoughts are with all involved and Nigel Stepney's family.

very sad and shocking news this. RIP.
No comment on if it was suicide in this case, but in general suicides by train/lorry and not a pleasant way to do the deed. I dont care how bad your mind is, there is no excuse for putting that burden on another person when there are other, tidier ways out of this life if you so wish.

Ignorant anyway. Guy in this situation isn't thinking at all. Brain is shorted, he can't see past his sickness. Like saying a guy having a heart attack or a stroke while driving is being inconsiderate of the people around him on the street.

He stopped on the hard shoulder, got out of his van and got hit by a lorry, it's a huge leap to conclude that must mean suicide.
Whatever the circumstances, condolences to those he's left, RIP.

Terrible news.
I'd be astonished if he intentionally took his own life. Last I knew he was doing very well in sportscars and had won things in GT and made the step up to LMP2 with JRM, so I kind of assumed the bad times for him were mostly behind him.
As far as I'm concerned it should be assumed to be an accident until and unless a coroner's inquest rules otherwise.

Suppose that means now we'll never get to read his "Red Mist" book, telling the inside story of spygate.

RIP, such sad news!
It's funny, I never remember him for spygate, but instead for being clobbered by a Ferrari in the pitlane, and his success with Schumacher.

Chill, Scotracer never said he didn't feel bad for Stepney.Ignorant coment, poor performance dude.

The wording of the report makes it sound like a suicide--regardless, it's shocking. RIP.
