I would just like to echo the complaints about the stupid tat they had for trophies today. These sort of things may seem little, but having a unique trophy for the historic Grands Prix really adds to the prestige of the event. We used to be saved from the glorified sponsors logos at races like Australia and Britain, but now it seems even these events aren't immune.

Obviously by running a competition Santander got the design for free, and then didn't want to spend anything on the manufacture of the winning design. They didn't look the most sturdy of things.

So, I didn't see any topic about it and I'm not sure it deserves its own thread, but what about the Guttierrez-Maldonado incident?

I really thought it was Maldonado's fault (not because he's Maldonado, but because he clearly moved left in the braking area while GUT was committed). Yet it was Guttierrez who got the penalty. What do you guys think?

It is unfortunate if his or her feelings are hurt but the fault is with Santander for placing them in that position in the first place. It could have been given as the Constructors' trophy and it would have been fine.

But this sort of casual junking of tradition for a small chunk of change really needs to be stopped. Imagine everyone gathering on Centre Court yesterday only to see Novak Djokovic not presented with the magnificent and historic link to the past and heritage that is their huge gold trophy after all but instead given some plastic pile of crap shaped vaguely like a bottle of Robinsons Barley Water. Would he and the crowd also not be allowed to cry bullshit at that either because it would upset the designer of the crap new trophy?

I still seriously suspect it was some sort of ghastly mistake and they misplaced the proper one.

Why take that risk? It's all very well saying it probably won't be hit again, but the fact is it can and repairing the barrier is a much better idea than just crossing your fingers and hoping nothing does happen.

 

That it's happened once means it's just as likely to happen again in the future (probability might be slightly lower due to less cars on the circuit and higher driver awareness)

You apparently don't know he doesn't get to keep it so it doesn't go in his trophy case anyway. He does know this because he's won it before so the snide little dig at Hamilton is misplaced.

And you are entirely missing my point which is that it is less about the individual winner, it is about the connection between the victory on the day and the link to history, the driver who wins that day is linked, by the presentation of the trophy, to those who have won it before. And who says it's tiny kids ("Look mommy!") designing it anyway? Or are these adult design students as I had thought?

Even if McLaren did let drivers keep the trophies, it wouldn't have been theirs to hand across on that occasion. Like the Wimbledon trophy, they just present it to you and then you later give it back. See the earlier pics of other drivers being photographed with it down the years.

The gold British Grand Prix cup doesn't go home with the driver, but they always get a smaller replica or some other one to keep (or the team keeps in McLaren's case). It's just that yesterday they presented the "keeper" on the podium rather than the historic one.

Claire would have been under ten years old then I think, that's her mum Virginia(Ginny) Frank was still recovering from his accident at the time of the 86 British GP, Ginny died last year and since then Williams cars have a small decal dedicated to her on the front wing pylon.

What was Kimi thinking returning to track like that . That was pretty scary and I am glad everyone involved is ok..massa did a great job, he could have hit his car head on and the accident would have been much worse.

Alonso excellent once again. I could not watch livetiming since I had to watch a pre-recorded race but I bet he must have been flying in the early stages of the race.

Bummed about Nico.. I was expecting to see a repeat of Bahrain with a thrilling battle for the win.

I don't care about both Alonso and Vettel venting over the radio.. What I care about is good racing and we got that.

A lot of journo/commentators gleefully tweeted Lewis's comments on the trophy as 'best comment of the day' etc etc, probably because they thought  it was one in the eye of a completely overly corporate influence on sport, lets face it those trophies were terrible and it's just taking it too far, their name is plastered everywhere, have some decent trophies for god sake, imagine if the wimbledon trophie was a gold slazenger racket or the word up a silver Nike swoosh!

 

I suspect Lewis would be mortified if he later found our they were designed by poor little orphans who hero worshipped him...perhaps less so for Uni students.

 

Anyway, my favourite SIlverstone experience so far and a great weekend to move from pit straight to club and opposite the podium. Saturday felt like everything was going to plan until the last 30 secs, was just as bewildered as Lewis. Sunday felt a little better :-D

 

So reminiscent of 2008. coming into the race after a bad run, a win or so off the championship, needing to turn it around, out qualfiied by his teammate but then getting max points with his main challengers getting none and the championship back on.

 

Hopefully onwards and upwards from here.

Apologies if this has been mentioned already, but after Lewis went back in off the podium he came back out again a few moments later with a gold trophy. It was either his 2008 one, or it was the real trophy and the Santander one was just for show.

Its the one that British GP winners are presented (but not allowed to retain). Essentially the same one he was presented in 2008 (and the same one presented to subsequent winners as well in 2009, 2010..etc).
