Every October for the last decade or so the main street of Palmer, about half way between Birdwood and Manumn South Oz is closed for a street party for Hot Rods, Customs and Classics. There is always a band, plenty of catering and a LOT of different cars. And even more people.

The Zipple Cruise, itself a major 400 car monthly event on the Sat night contributes to a weekend for the rodders.

And a lot of other cars that I never see elsewhere either.

I got a bit carried away with my camera so have lots of pics.

Great stuff! 23 is a 1959 and 28 is a 1960.

 

Also, 2 is a Pontiac rather than a Cadillac, and 10 is a Plymouth rather than a Dodge Super Bee.

I did know the green Road Runner is a Plymouth and that the Cadillac is a Pontiac. Senility setting in!

Those Chevs I am never sure.

The Aussie Classics and a couple of ring ins.

1 A Moggy Minor, how they should have been made!

5 Monaro HK GTS 5 litre auto. This is the rarest color and there was 2 there on the day. The other a 186S 4 speed. I had a 307 manual that color in79.

6Torana LC GTR. If you have seen pics of my Sports Sedan that is what the car started life like!

7Falcon XY 4wd ute. Yes that was factory. Mostly Jeep running gear.

8Falcon XB V8 sedan

9 Falcon XB Couple

10 1979-79 Aussie LTD

11 Holden EK ute. A local and a workhorse.

12 Holden HR classic hottie. Oh so 70s!

13 Torana Hatchback. almost looks strange without the A9X flares!

17 Valiant  6 Pack Charger. Yes that is factory with Webers, alloys and magenta paint. Reputedly the fastest 6 cyl car in its day. 302 genuine HP from the 4.3 hemi 6.

 

And yes the details are for you over seas types. The locals should know,,, maybe!

I just love those wire flywheels on the torry and Tattoo,,, evidently his house looks like that too. That is him taking the pic of a bird who must have sat in very car in the street.

A range of different engines.

1 Common or garden dual quad 428 ford

2 Not quite your average valiant engine

3FJ Holden engine

4 Factory 6 pack Valiant engine. 

5 & 6 Zephyr engines.

7 Plastic fantastic aka 308 Holden.

8 triple Carb Chev, mind the teeth!

9 Twin carb Mopar. A little unusual in a hot rod.

If you like this sort of thing - and I do-then the York dragway  is a good place to be. Very taken with the rat rod subgenre - things like a matt back Morris 10 with distressed bodywork but running a humungous V8. A lot of motor sport takes itself far too seriously - drag racing doesn't , thank God. What's not to like about a supermarket kid's ride Postman Pat van with a bike engine pulling wheelies and 100mph plus quarters? 

 

Some  look down their noses  at drag racing- DSJ didn't and that's good enough for me .

Google 'Hot Rod' Speed week. Some very alternative equipment going quite fast. 

At the serious end real imitation road cars doing 6.60. Yes for real. Though a LOT of true everyday drivers running high tens to mid 12s. This over 4 days at 4 tracks and driving about a thousand miles all up between tracks. Driving, no trailers.
