While looking up Giuliano Alesi I just learned there's a middle-aged guy who picks up regular top-10s in Super Formula Lights who is called "Dragon".

You aren't a slightly-off-the-main-ladder single seater series if you don't have an inexplicable single name alias middle-aged driver propping up your grid. Super Formula holding a candle for Italian F3000 and etc.

Thanks to this thread, I realised that the Superformula season had started and I hadn't noticed!

But I have now caught up with Rounds 1 and 2 at Fuji.  And what the hell has got them so fired up this year?  I saw more action in those two races than in the last two full seasons of SF!  Good tough and generally clean racing, a pleasure to see it.

I think the cars just lucked into a weekend where everything was in the sweet spot.  I am hoping their approach to revising the downforce and aerodynamic package will help to give them a more consistently racy car, but that seems to be for next year.

Something interesting to note, Super Formula has introduced an app for fans, that features live telemetry from the cars.  It's not just the usual stuff, it seems as they also give tire temps, steering angle, and fuel load in real time.  I don't know how much fans actually are dying to know those details, but it's neat that it is being offered.  They show it on a youtube video featuring Nojiri's Q2 run that netted him the pole.  Really interesting to see how long it took to warm the tires up, especially the right rear.
