I think you guys need to remember that the first year for a team with a complete redesign on the car front and a totally new engine tends to be a struggle.

When McLaren switched to Peugoet it was a nightmare. Similar happened when they went with Merc blocks for 1995. It took them three seasons to get it right, not three months. Don't expect miracles. This is a long game.

p.s. if the car is running in limited mode for a specific, known reason (i.e. seal) and suffers no other faults, that has to be good news...

But look, that clearly isn't the case. The more I see of mclaren the more I think my guy is right, they've serious issues if they're not able to put in the laps. Red bull were struggling but there were other Renault engined cars putting in the laps. Here we have mclaren unable to run because of their pu. The difference is, mclaren are putting a pr spin on it because unlike Horner they don't want to throw their new partner under the bus.

People need to take this more easely.

Yes there's a delay on inicial plan but we already know that first 4 races are going to be dificult.

The important thing is that they are able to clear all problems that arises.

SkySports
McLaren have just told us that they are confident they have now found and fixed the cause of this morning's loss of power. They don't want to give too much away, but they had planned to be back on track at 2:30pm GMT, but that didn't happen. They are now putting the car back together and hope to be out within the next half hour, so around 3:30pm GMT we may see Jenson Button in action again.

God forbid they run into such technical/electrical issues during eg. free practice 3. That would most probably mean qualy down the drain too since their fault finding skills are seriously lacking. I say this in reference to what happened in Abu Dhabi too, where it took them two day to solve an electrical problem.

The situation is not good but we should wait for the last day of testing to hit the panic button but the sooner we realize that the first races will be used as testing, the better.

This is excruciating. Just when things seemed to be getting on the right track, along comes a day like this. Now the advantage is clear of supplying more than one team...

Not going well at McLaren. Remember the MGU-K seal that needed a new design? The new design failed. It'll be "re-engineered" for Sunday

With just one car, running part-time, they can't be getting the mileage to uncover all potential issues - and it's taking a lot longer to come across the issues they are finding. Have to wonder if they regret not having a second team, even if it seems they have been running pretty lean in terms of parts even for one car.

    1. A new re-engineered seal is scheduled to arrive and will be applied later this evening. #F1Testing

  1. After the morning session, we found similar issues to Thursday. We will now resume testing this afternoon with limited power to the MGU-K.

That's a little stupid to be honest, I wonder they rushed the new re-engineered seal that used today.

Edit: So it was a temporary fix, good to know.

It was a temporary fix running today as well.

McLaren says MGU-K seal still an issue. Honda told F1i earlier it was temporary fix, wants to improve quality: http://en.f1i.com/news/3868-honda-working-improve-quality.html  #F1

It wasn't a temporary fix. Where did they say that. It was the reeningeered seal they also failed.

Frustrating. I hope "re-engineered" isn't code for "duct tape".

So how can this "re-engineered" seal be ready by this evening when the current one (the fix) only arrived yesterday?

 colonel badger ,

I remember I read a quote from a Honda engine guy that the replacement seal used today was only a temporary solution .

Because it didn't arrive yesterday or today.

Maybe because they didn't stop "re-engineering" the seal when they finished the one they delivered for today, they did the best for today with the short period of time they had  and keep working on a better solution for tomorrow, my guess.

Wow. Different stories from different sources. I guess we'll never know. Let's just hope tomorrow is a cleaner day. At this rate they will enter the first GP having not run a single race distance.

Please can anyone clarify what a seal is? Mclaren must think we are fools using the word re-engineering for a bloody Power unit seal.

I just hope Alonso gives the MP4-30 the full beans tomorrow (whether they like it or not) to further expose any other hidden flaws. Cause the rate at which they're going is certainly not satisfactory.

Lets hope they solve the seal problem for tomorrows running . A very frustrating day for Jenson and the team today . If the cars good tomorrow they could do with giving Jenson some of the days running to help him out .

It's probably some sort of elaborate 'o' ring used to seal the connection between the unit and ICE. It needs engineering like any other part of the car.

Indeed but JB could easily say don't worry about it. I'm not sure the drivers are learning much atm.

honestly what do or did you expect? compared to renault for example last year the honda pu test so far has been stellar. i think we cant expect mclaren to be up with the other teams this season in the race for second best.

The pessimism in this thread is something remarkable. Why don´t just wait and see?

Why is it a drama if Mclaren-Honda struggles at the start of the season? They need to spend time learning what they have in hands, what kind of issues they have and why, how they can solve them now and forever, what other issues may come. The only can learn about those issues when they turn up. Surely they would prefer issues didn´t exist but who said everything would be perfect? There are too many new things in this team, they must put everything together. Which is the idea, being competitive or being the best ones?

I cannot understand either the pessimism in this thread or the optimism in some other threads. I would be optimism if my team were the best one and pessimistic if my team were a lost cause, everything in the middle leaves many possibilities for the future.

I think Mercedes will be the team to beat, Red Bull will be strong, Ferrari has improved, Williams will be up there, but hey, I am not a fortune teller so I just think.

Where is McLaren-Honda? Where will they be in the future? Do you really know? I don´t have a clue. It is an interesting project because for some reason McLaren-Honda people truly sound like people with great expectations, and because I don't have a clue, I like it. They may be disappointed now but were they truly expecting to be really competitive by the time the first GP arrived? Didn´t they see any problems coming?

I´ve read enough internet forums for knowing that there are always people who know that something will never happen-something will happen for sure. I prefer saying this in a pessimistic thread because I don´t want to downplay people expectations, but the same ideas would apply in an optimistic thread. Wait and see.

well i expected for honda to take the challenge seriously, throw disgusting amount of money at the project, nothing spared, and i expected they came out with a decent result since 1. they learned from others, with concept/route to follow and 2. looking at other manufactors last year, they must have learned not to underestimate the challenge. Still they turn up with this

Because McLarens credibility has died over the last 2 years, you cant blame the pessimism. McLaren has lost the benefit of the doubt

The pessimism in the thread is a combination of exactly what you write above, plus the emotional reaction of us Alonso fans who know he only has 2 or 3 top years left in him to get that 3rd championsihip. Of course there are more serious concerns in the world, but it'd be a nice final chapter if, at the 2nd attempt, the McLaren-Alonso partnership brought the success it should have done first time around. Clearly that won't happen in 2015, but seeing the car conking out every 10 laps or so is worse than anyone feared.
