I don't think there were any official names at the time.If I remember rightly,if you went to a Shaw Club meeting a bend was called one thing,If it was a Preston Club meeting it was known as something else. When the circuit was extended,I think the Preston Club was the only one still holding meetings there on a regular basis and that's when names for parts of the course came about.Of course, the naming of things might also have something to do with the Karting. The highest part of the course is known as Coward's Summit, which is apparently named after one of the Kart racers.

I've seen his name in the results somewhere recently. It might have been at an Auto 66 meeting..

There's also Geoff Martin,Jim Hodson and  Kenny Shepherd who did the MGP this year just gone.

That's it..The Cherry Tree, on Common Lane. (went there a few times).

I`m an Warrington ex-racer too, and knew the other racers in the Warrington area.

The likes of:

Mark Hodge, Tony Salt (used to run Aintree racing club), Damien Fairhurst, Charlie Hughes, Dave Parry (used to build everyone's cranks), Dave Gandy, Jim Hodson (Wigan, still racing), Mark Farrimond (sold my TZ350 to him) I bought it as a TZ250F from Mick Grice))

Hi Alan and welcome to the forum.

And may I say the TZ 350 ex Mick Grice you sold me was the best TZ 350 I had the pleasure to own. With tweaks, myself and John Golding made with help from Nigel Rigg, I had lots of results on that bike.

That's an interesting one,Paul.I've never heard of the Goose Circuit. There's some well known names from the past in there.Neil Tuxworth,Clive Horton(on a Bantam?),Allan Duffus, amongst others, and I presume that's Rob McElnea.I didn't realise he was racing as early as 1971.There's also 3 who always used to do well at Aintree,Tony Salt,John McEntee and John Dieterman.

By the way,is the R.Marshall in the sidecars Roger Marshall?I've a vague idea that I read somewhere that he used to race them.

Yes that was one from the bottom of the box Eric!

Well spotted, that is indeed Roger Marshall and Jim Johnson in the sidecars, and ironically I was probably taken to that meeting by Roger's mother & father as we used to be neighbours in those days, at the end of that season Roger sold the outfit to buy a TR2B Yamaha and try his hand at solo's.....and the rest as they say is history.

That is Rob Macs father in the programme, young Rob would have only been 10 years old then : )

The Goose Circuit was a name given to the club circuit when it was realised that it looked like a Goose from the air, if you look at the corner known as the gooseneck on the diagram you can see how that corner got its name.

I thought it was a bit early.I didn't know his father raced as well

Would that be Terry Haslam And Mal Carter in the 501-1000cc race?

Yes Terry was a real flyer on that Norton, and Mal was a regular at Cadwell too.

Alan Pacey & Eric Sunderland both listed, also rode Mal Carters bikes, I can remember Ron Haslam riding Terrys Seeley Norton at Croft, he was only15.

Neil Tuxworth and Clive Horton listed in the 125s.

I only saw Alan Pacey ride once, at a Cadwell Park national in 1973,which is the only time I've been there.I don't know if he was riding one of Mal Carter's bikes that day.I'll have to have a look at the programme.

The same year,I went to the MGP for the first time and saw Phil Haslam do the first 100mph lap on the  Pharaoh Yam.

He was a quick lad at Croft, the last time I saw him ride he was on a Rob North BSA in the traditional red/white scheme, he was another of the Langley Mill crew.

Greg

I remember marshalling at Cadwell in I think 1973 and another lad I was teamed with telling me this, I was a bit surprised as you had to be a minimum of 16 at the time to race.

Also no. 36 S. Moynihan would be Steve Moynihan who won the Junior MGP on an Aermacchi that year.

Ref "125s and Banams"

I knew Clive Horton started off on Formula Bantams, this was possibly through his cousin Peter Horton who went on to do race photograpy.

T Brown is Terry Brown, who was campaining the ex Fred Launchbury Formula Bantam, c/w twin front drum brakes!

S Galpin is Steve Galpin who went on to ride TZ's in the Nationals. IMO his riding ability was eclipsed by his ability to get sponsorship!  The British Shoe Corporation was one of them.

Finally, its interesting to note the early tie-up between Mick Cashmore and Gerry Pell.  I battled against this duo in the 1984 Formula Bantam Championship.

Here's a "modern bantam".It's not really a nostalgic photo but there again it's an old bike.Always had a soft spot for Bantams. My first road bike wnen I was 16 was a D1,

More on "125's  and Banams" (sic.)

Besides those already mentioned I spotted a few of my former rivals, including Mick Barr, Bob Fleming & Neil Tuxworth. I believe Neil to have started his career on a Bantam. He certainly spent a lot of time asking about them in the paddocks!

Like you Eric my first bike was a D1 that came with a spare engine. That spare engine was modified somewhat & led me on to building & racing a Formula Bantam with reasonable success.  Newmarket class champion & Bantam Club class lap record among other things.

It would be great to see more photos. of the ultra lightweights on here.
