There have been threads on this forum re the movie Grand Prix which have unused footage or stills, I was wondering if there was anything similar out there from Le Mans?............Martin

there should be tons of out-takes from the film....whether the film company has kept them is another thing entirely!

What about footage from "Day of the Champion" the Steve McQueen film that got canned? Any footage of that survive?

Hi Stephen,
During our exhaustive research process, we managed to uncover more information on 'Day Of The Champion' than had ever been previously discovered. However, in editing our mass of available on-screen materials down to a 100-minute feature, we've decided to concentrate more on the extraordinary story behind the making of 'Le Mans'. But Steve McQueen's desire to top 'Grand Prix' and make up for the disappointment of 'Day Of The Champion' not having made it to the big screen will still form an important part of our film's story.
Hope this helps
Genevieve

Thanks John. TV could finally become interesting again!
So, hopefully, in the current climate, we might also see some more uplifting films - e.g. Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines, Monte Carlo or Bust, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World - or anything with Terry-Thomas really . . .
Keep well, everybody. Please.

It was my friend Richard Wiseman who eventually found the 'Le Mans' out-takes.

Steve McQueen: The Lost Movie
Is avalible on-demand on SKY-GO or on your telly if you have the sky box connected to the internet.
It's a good watch. I reccomend this film.
A few years ago I was in the RLL catering tent at Laguna Seca and had a great talk with David Letterman about the gambits John Sturges had to make to get the Day of the Champion off the ground...Amazing tales of taking the studios monies, hiding the studios monies at SOLAR and spoon feeding the production as Steve's moods changed. As my Dad was working on Grand Prix at the same time we at home knew that Day of the Champion was its direct competitor and wittnessed the stress and daily machinations that MGM and the producers had to go through to get their baby "first passed the post".
When Sturges quit (sighting the Inmates running the asylum) everyone at MGM including Frankenheimer let out a collective sigh of relief.

I don’t understand “working on the films at the same time” Jon, the films were five years apart.
He's not referring to 'Le Mans'.
'Day of the Champion' was the earlier stillborn project.
