October 30, 1960: the Austin Hillclimb, organized by the Texas Spokes Sports Car Club
The event attracted some 50 entries, although with a 6/10-mile track to cover, it was a short one.

1. Tommy Sibson [Devin-bodied Ferrari 340A/Chevy, chassis 0202]
2. Bill Janowski [Monsterati Spl/Chevy]
3. Jack Guyer [Kellison Coupe]
4. John Mecom Jr. [Ferrari 166MM/Olds, chassis 0068]

This seems to have been Mecom's only appearance as a race driver, before Mecom Sr. put an end to any further ambitious plans.

I'm not terribly confident of my Pikes Peak info, but I believe Al was driving a Jerry Eisert-modified 21 (chassis '936B') with a Ford 289 CID engine, and Bobby a 21, possibly an 18 (chassis '371'?), rebuilt around a new chassis manufactured by the Unsers and fitted with a small block Chevy.

Jerry Eisert said to be from Costa Mesa, California. Where was the Eisert shop?

Yep, Costa Mesa, that's where his shop was. Though he was working also for Frank Harrison of Tennessee (Chattanooga, I think?) at the time, but I doubt he tended two shops.

So far two have been overlooked, one I raced in about 1956 and the other I had entered the 1956 event and had to back no show for various reasons.

The no show first; this being the Giants Despair climb near Wilkes Barre PA.  This started in 1906 and held for about 10 years to be re-incarnated in 1951 through 1956. In the latter years it was held in conjunction with the Brynfan Tyddyn road races.  Good details are available via   http://www.harveysla...ory_brynfan.htm

The second was a SCCA event held in 1956-57ish a few miles south of Paducah KY. Ran two cars for that one as I remember. It was notable that a group of genuine hill-billy types stood at the finish line complete with long rifles and big hats and bib overalls.  I suspect they were there to make sure nobody varied into their hill country.

I think if I went into my attic I might find a first in class trophy for a Blackhawk Hill Climb about 1957ish but I am blurry about any details which would make three not listed yet..

Cheers

Unusual way of denoting the time taken. Was this peculiar to this event, or was it used elsewhere? I don’t recall ever having seen it before.

Tim, It does turn up, I think on early electronic timers. Bill Close was the timing man in western New York state. Worked out of the Flight Research and Vehicle Dynamics Department of Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory, near Buffalo, N.Y.  A scotsman and collaborator with Bill Milliken. He was active both sides of the border. His splendid collection of a lifetime in motor sport is held at IMRRC, Watkins Glen, NY.

All the early results from Rattlesnake Point Hill Climb, Ontario, 1950-1952, were in the same format.

You can't do four decimal places on a stopwatch?

Watkins Glen, 1972

High above the track for the Grand Prix will

be William Close of Williamsville and his wife,

Virginia, leaders of the 108-man team which times

and scores the race and produces the tremendously

complicated charts which make the race under-

standable to experts.

CLOSE STARTED following racing in his native

England, especially motorcycle racing. He

continued this when he came to Canada in 1947,

where he did all kinds of work on stock car

and dirt circuits. He started timing and scoring

at Watkins Glen in 1958 with the first Formula

Libre event.

His involvement at the Glen stemmed from the

interest of many other members of the Cornell

Aeronautical Laboratory staff. Close observed

recently that at one time it seemed all the Grand

Prix workers were from Cornell lab. His wife, then

a lab programmer, had started working on Glen

races in 1949.

While the Grand Prix is the only race for

which he is the chief of scoring and timing, Close

attends most other races, scouting for persons

to serve on his October staff. Close says he needs

an expert staff because every one of the 1,200

timed Grand Prix laps “has to be perfect.”

I would think it's a newspaper problem. I've come across all kinds of weird timing data in newspapers. From difficult-to-read press handouts, over inattentive journalists to overwoked typesetters, there's enough scopre for things to go wrong!

The Glenwood Hill Climb was held in western New York State, near Buffalo. Competitive events were held at Murray Hill Road, near Kissing Bridge ski area, in the early fifties. The event attracted competitors from Canada.

The Niagara Falls Gazette

no better than gain a consolation

award in the recent hill climb."

Apologies if this has been mentioned before. I have a charming set of three small booklets on "Colorado Sports Cars Of The 1950s". The volumes are:

1. Georgetown Hill Climb June 6-7,1953

2. Buffalo Bill Hill Climb August 1-2, 1953

3. The Aspen Street Races 1951-1954

All published by Ron Shaw with photos by William and Beryl Martinez. Frank Barrett mentioned these in the Aspen Road Races thread. Mostly photos, but the back cover of the Buffalo Bill volume has a photo of the typed results sheet of the event. Interesting items are the presence of three of the mysterious "Porche" make, and the fact that a Siata beat the fastest of a horde of MGs by 14 seconds.

Interested and pleased to see Norm Namerow's name in Rupert's post #94.  I saw him a number of times at Mosport racing a Lotus 19 c/w Ford 289.  Geeezzz, but he was fast.

RIP, Norm.

For more Buffalo Bill see here. (Post #67.)

Also S.C.C.A. Sports Car, November-December 1954, Pages 49-51.

On 8 August 1954 the #47 Siata V8 of Robert Murrell won the over 1,500 c.c. class E with a time of 6:07.6 for the 4½ mile course.

In Class C Production Paul Reeves headed a horde of Jaguars with a time of 6:00.4. In 11th place in the class was Temple Buell, Jaguar, 6:30.9.

FTD Bob Carnes, Jagallac coupe, 5:51.5. Also referred to as Jagillac.

1953: "Sheriff Carl Enlow of Jefferson County estimated 20,000 persons stood in intermittent rain along the precipitous grades."

Where was the Georgetown Hill Climb held? (Not to be confused with an event held in California?)

Georgetown is an old silver mining town in the Rocky mountains in Colorado. It still exists, and has turned its old narrow-gauge steam railroad into a tourist attraction. According to the Shaw booklet, the course ran 2 1/2 miles up a hill to the reservoir above Georgetown. Looking at Google maps, this road can only be Guanella pass road. Link
