IMO the setups for Colin McRae are not as important as in other simulations and the most important thing is the tyres. I´ve won in expert level in all the rallyes without giving much attention to the setup. It´s just a matter of practice and not making any errors.

Eli, what can I do to be a bit quicker in Sweden?

I'm trying lots of speed and trying to slide the car into the corners or Max acceleration and dabbing the brake or handbrake if it's a left/right 4 type corner. Am I barking up the right tree here?! :)

well.. practice practice and practice...

The setups are (as Eli pointed out) not realy what makes a good stage time... but I find it easy'er to use "max acceleration" on the twisty stages, because you dont realy get to max speed anyway...

To be fast in Sweden you have to be always whithin the road and try not to hit the snow on the sides. There is also a racing technique called the pendulum, used be the Scandinavian rally drivers. What you have to do is approach the corner on the wrong side of the turn, that is, approaching a right hand turn you dont approach on the left side, as you would normally do, but on the right side. At the last possible moment, you have to flick to the left, then swerve sharply right, making full use of the pendulum effect to commit your front wheels to the desired line. In the real cars sometimes it´s even necesary to start on the right, go left, and go right again to get the right line, but in the game is enough with the standard one.
I know it sounds pretty complicated but when you get the timing right it really works. You are always going sideways so you have to control the amount of acceleration very carefully and most of the times you have to let the car go without accelerating.
Obviously all this is much easier with a steering wheel, since you get more precise control.
That´s all I can help you with. The rest is just practice and SPECIALY not making errors.
Good luck.

For Indonesia:
On Gravel:
If Nicky doesn't say "Don't Cut" you cut the corner! If you've got a steeringwheel you can put half the car on the inside. Watch out for trees though. This also allows you to brake very late using the grass or the ditch to slow down. Floor the accelerator early to get full control of the car when back on the gravel. None of the above apply to the steep cliffs nor the marshlands.

On Tarmac:
If you know the road this is the place to push hard. If you don't it still is. If you don't crash at first you haven't driven fast enough. Using tall gears you can go 7-8 secs faster than Colin on the long straights (you'll lose most of it in the forests, but it's great fun).

On Sand:
I'm usually very careful on the beach rather losing a second on braking early than going too far having to dig out of the sand. It's a lot like Sweden: staying on the road is the only way.

As for setup it's quite tricky as the specials are very different and it's pretty easy to hit a tree or two to reduce your repairtime allowing less time for setup changes. Never ever use hard suspension.

BTW, what steering sensitivity do you use. At first it was very tricky driving with anything but the least sensitive option. But after some training I discovered that the medium option was actually 5-10 secs faster on every stages. This is true especially on very slippery surfaces where you need to slide the car (Sweden) and in tight alternating corners(Indonesia). Always use manual gears.

Forgot to ask.

Anyone interested in racing against me over the 'net. I've got a LAN-connection so for me time and speed is no problem. I know there are some problems with McRae's internetgames but I've usually managed to get the game going.

I live in Finland (GMT +2). If someone's in the yok.utu.fi network we could race over the LAN.
