I could have sworn I read it was on softs?
Oh, well. Nevermind, then.

I was following the live feed and I'm pretty sure it was on softs too. Does anyone have any quotes to say otherwise

Can't find a quote anywhere saying the tires his best time was set on or how old they were or how long a run he did on them.

Translation: Less than an hour till the end, Button on 2nd place with supersofts. Ocon, sixth with softs

So there was almost 100% reliability at the latest Barcelona test, albeit with a few minor sensor issues. Positive news but this is still using an engine that is detuned because the ERS was overheating.

My question is: Is this the easier part?  Is n't it more difficult to get a reliable and optimised ICE with ERS?

Hopefully McLaren Honda will start testing a new ICE with ERS very soon.  This is where the season will be 'make or break' for improving the competitiveness depending on whether there is more reliability issues such as over heating.

but I got the impression, that Honda is checking/weigthing up their options as to "on what to spend their tokens", and that the final test will be in Austria (2nd test). And then they will put their chips down (spend their tokens) and bring a major PU-upgrade for the rest of the season.
That would make some sense, at least for me, but would also imply, that they have already tested some parts/solution during the recent Barcelona test (yesterday/today).

I was thinking along those lines as well.

Its a very long wait but hopefully with upgrades for the PU, McLaren Honda can be somewhat competitive at the Belgian GP and challenge for the podium.

Button 1:26.927 today

Rosberg over 2.5 seconds quicker yesterday and if driving today would have knocked another tenth or two off with the tracks extra rubbering in?

Still it looks like an improvement for McLaren, hard to say with the different tyres and hard to compare with mostly test drivers today, but still hope.

The next two days practicing  at Monaco will be interesting/revealing.

Hard to judge from times today. But I'm sure they had plenty of fuel in the car.Even at pre-season tests Alonso did 1.25.9 with softs and both Magnussen and Button did 1.25.2 with supersofts. So we can be sure they haven't done qualy simulation

Monaco will put to test the drivability of the engine for sure, will be interesting.

Well the reliability has been solved it seems .
I'm sure with time the car will get faster and faster.

With drivers like Alonso and jenson it is in the best hands .

Just watching the start of the Spain gp alonso rounds up 4 cars in turn 1 that's just amazing .

Reliability is irrelevant until you have performance. What's the aim here? To make a slow engine reliable? No. You need to make a fast engine, then make it reliable, like Mercedes.

Like Mercedes? Their PU in this formula has been pretty fast & reliable since the beginning.

Err, what!? Did you watch the 2014 season? Mercedes had one of the highest failure rates of all teams.

Australia - Hamilton RET

Canada - Hamilton RET Rosberg 2nd (both suffered brake issues)

England - Rosberg RET

Singapore - Rosberg RET

Abu Dhabi - Rosberg RET

That's just off the top of my head and not counting all the failures Hamilton suffered in qualifying.

Well yeah, they weren't perfect, but they've had nothing near the problems the other manufacturers have had.  Ferrari was fairly reliable last year but so slow as to not be comparable.

failure = reliability

I'm talking about the combination of the two. Merc has had the best performance and the best or 2nd best reliablilty.

Not all of those are due to the engine.

Yeah Silverstone was gearbox,Singapore was electrical failure caused by something in the steering column(?) and the rest were ERS failures. Oz was engine I think, a faulty plug or something, can't quite remember.

Sorry for OT

The original point from Austin was that the Mercedes power unit has been reliable since day one. Refuting the idea to make a fast PU then make it reliable.

And, while Mercedes had a few DNFs for non-PU factors, across the 8 Mercedes cars there were very few (if any?) engine failures.

Honda have delivered an engine that is neither fast not reliable.

But we have light at the end of the tunnel. At every race there has been an improvement in reliability and/or pace. The expected step forward in speed was not delivered in Spain but the car at least ran reliably and furthermore inthis test it ran well too.

They just need to keep up a steady progress, bite off the gap a little at a time. My onto expectations now are that we will be points regulars by the end of the season. I have full faith we will then close up a huge portion of the gap over the winter.

Arai's comments are understandable as a target and he should not be ridiculed for aiming high, BUT they are also totally unrealistic and if we get a podium this year, let one 'mid season', I will be utterly flabbergasted.

A win is always possible. Remember Panis in Monaco...or Fisi in Brasil. But probability of these events is questionable. Maybe a lucky podium in rain affected GP.

"But maybe in Monaco or Canada we will have a much better chance of getting points, and then to achieve a podium in the middle of the season - we hope.

Podiums by the middle of the season for Honda? That seems incredibly optimistic currently. Maybe they have a lot of performance in the works that we don't know about. To get that type of position they'd need to be bringing 50-70hp of performance and a lot of downforce.

Great that Jenson was able to have such a productive day of testing at the same track he struggled so much with the car with during the race. By the sound of it they cleared up that issue.

If you believe what Fernando said on monday, they do, and they have already many new parts done in Woking ready to be tested. But one thing is to have the potential and another thing is being able to unlock it.

Still, to get that type of performance you're talking finding 2 seconds per lap more than the other teams. Unless they have huge amounts of engine power just waiting to be installed into the car that to me seems unrealistic.

In the history of the sport has any team made an in-season jump in form of the sort that McLaren would need to get a podium? I know they started 09 with a dog but then won races with it but they weren't in this sort of trouble then. Normally only big leaps happen over one or more winters don't they?

Those pics are real nice! JB's helmet suits the car perfectly. With the old livery it was a little bit too coordinated. And is it me or is predatory grey actually just black?

Podiums by mid season? Come on really...?

Everything is spread in many interview and I don't have time right now to search the quotes but basically he said many engineers joining the team, a lot of new ideas, some will come in Monaco, others in june and others in september, car has a lot of potential not unlocked yet, people outside the team view things in one way but inside the team they have a different view (of the things yet to come and the potential of the car), but he also said that miracles in F1 don't exist. So don't expect them to cut 2 seconds in 4 races (this last phrase is my opinion).

Could it be that the upgrades that they have planned that require some of the tokens have real promise of big gains and this is why Arai is so optimistic of podiums?

I am struggling to see how he can be so hopeful after all that's happened so far.

Right. They were also able to test well right off the bat, doing as many laps as they wanted ... which helped them develop even more. Honda is just now getting to the point where they can do that. And to be fair, Honda may just now be getting to the same part of the timeline that Merc was at when they became able to do that. They may even be  ahead of Merc in terms of how long it has taken them to get to that point. Now that they've shown the ability to put in laps without too many problems, I would think that performance improvements should come quicker and more often. But who knows...

Nah. It's close, but it's a really dark metallic grey. Looks about the same color as my car, & my car is def not black.

MP4-30 will look great in next 3 races with SuperSoft but if McLaren add some red on the RW main plane it will be even better. That red flow-vis looked fantastic on the RW. Here another high-res.
