Yikes   hoping no-one (including the driver) got hurt.

EDIT: looking closer at the picture driver seems to be out of the car

Nasty. Noticing it's between two fences, so we can only hope the crowd were all behind that lower second one.

Nope, the crowd and marshalls are allowed everywhere behind the FIA safety fence

Looks like same corner from last year-

That is one dangerous place to spectate from.

Can we wait until things are actually reported before throwing around words like that?

If you look at the picture in that post, there appears to be a chair under the car...

Bingo.

Frantic speculation in such a situation achieves nothing

After the reports of personal injuries, police on the scene and the race not restarted I fear for the worst..Hope my gut feeling is wrong though.

Maybe it's a bit early after the incident but with the FIA so obsessed with safety I just can't see why the WTCC is going here this year. (maybe after this incident they won't)

A car landed in a spectator area at Brands and by the grace of god no one was hurt. That hasn't people racing there.

However the Flugplatz corner at Nord is incredibly dangerous from a spectator (as well as driver) viewpoint. I can't understand why anyone would spectate on the exit of that corner. I don't want to appropriate blame because obviously a car shouldn't end up there, but that obviously need to re-think the viewing areas.

It seems like we kill someone in semi-pro/pro races at the Nordschleiffe every few years?

A sad reminder of why the hated modern F1 tracks look like they look. If you don't have airports full of tarmac between the track and the spectators, well, then...

What the hell? Did the car flip over the fence? Or, looking at rhukkas's video, maybe the tyre wall acted as a ramp?

Are the fences any lower than in F1?

About airports full of tarmac, I've one word to say: Monaco

I don't think any motor racing spectator expects cars to end up on the other side of a high fence they're stood/sat behind. It's a freak occurrence rather than a probable one.

Yes, but there the guardrails are immediately on the limit of the track. Which makes it easier to prevent cars from flipping over. Why are the guardrails there possible on the limit of the track? Because the corner-speeds are relatively low.

And then... it has happened in Monaco, a car flipping over the rail. Patrick Tambay in 1986, something...

There are many, many tracks I would love to see modern F1 cars race... The Nurburgring, Zandvoort, Montjuich (talking about the subject). It won't happen for the above mentioned reason.

I read on another GT forum that the Nissans are notorious for getting air at the Flugplatz.

Wow, that's incredible - reminds me of Manfred Winkelhock's famous F2 crash (at the same corner?).

Very sad that a spectator has been killed, but after watching that I'm honestly surprised it wasn't more.  Hopefully those who were injured can all make a full recovery.  RIP.

That's terrible, I'm so sad for all the people & their families involved. I'm so sad my favourite sport can be so cruel. All of us know that motorsport is dangerous, but no one expects to go and watch a race on a Saturday afternoon and never return home.

Thoughts with Jann too, he must be feeling terrible. Hope he can quickly recover mentally from this.

Yes he is, also confirmed to drive a Nissan LMP1 in the WEC this year.
After years of safe video gaming, what a terrible experience of "real life racing" for him...

It seems an aerodynamic issue, like those of endurance Mercedes years ago

I have seen footage of the incident and sadly the car flipped just like the Mercs and the GT1 Porsche did years ago. It goes over back first and lands in the fenced area which is higher than the track. LIke lift hits the front and gets under the front splitter.

There did not seem to be anyone in front of Jann, but there was a car behind, that he might have lapped, possibly the air hitting front end and getting lift as it did for the Merc and Porsche drivers in 99.

Flugplatz is very fast, there is a sort of lip in the road there but thousands of laps have been done by GTR's and GT cars there and in loads of traffic, at night, in the wet, in the dry.

Lord knows why this happened, and let's hope there is no knee jerk, maybe a restriction to watching right there, but nothing else.

I'm probably not alone in having been a bit worried about the GT3 cars at flugplatz for some time, they are getting faster and faster each year. I hope something will now be done.

This was caused by a damaged front wing.

Thoughts to those involved. Unfortunately motorsports are dangerous as it says on your ticket, I hope the reaction is nothing more than a higher barrier. Cars have been in the crowd at many circuits. Just hope nobody takes extreme/needless action...

I watched a video of the accident and it's frightening how the car all of a sudden took of and rendered Mardenborough a passenger of an airborne car.

Indeed, there's a glider airstrip just outside the circuit at that corner. Nothing to do with the track.

Yes it is that corner and that's just what I thought when I read the story. Indeed I just noticed that Mardenborough has got airborne in exactly the same way as Winkelhock.

Oh G*d, what an horrible accident.

It reminds me not only of Winkelhock's crash but also of Mario Andretti's 2003 Indianapolis crash where the car took off after running over some debris.
