We know it has been happening for a few years with off track CGI advertisements but was today a step to far? I am talking about the 'visit Malaysia' at the end of the grid straight on track that was used. The first time I saw it I just cringed and thought to myself you make us pay to watch F1 so we get to see it add free and the result is you place more TV only advertisements into the race itsself.

Am I alone here or was that ad off putting to others also?

F1 and ad free?

Take a closer look at the cars, guardrails and billboards next time.

It did look somewhat odd, but I saw it as a compensation for all the talk about the Malaysian weather being close to unbearable. ;)

I get that and I have no problem there. What I am talking about is the CGI ad that was placed so it looked like it was physically drawn onto the track itself and which would have only been visible to people watching the live feed (on TV).

Well there is little point in advertising Malaysia to people who are already in Malaysia...

These CGI messages need to go though, they look awful and distract from the racing.

I gotta say I really disliked it a lot.

If you want adverts please spray paint the grass/run off like this used to. These CG adverts stand out like a sore thumb.

The best wishes to Bernie were kind of funny in a way. This isn't. What are we going to hear next time? "Lewis, keep it on the grey commercialized stuff."

From what I hear about this and other thing too, I think I am blessed. I do not notice ads at all (unless I'm looking for them). Never have.

Unless you took it on subliminally. If you find yourself in Malaysia without really knowing why, you know who to blame :rotfl:

I'll let you guys into a little secret. There are no Tilke circuits.

For the past 10 years his circuits have all been CGI, every inch of tarmac is CGI. Google map those circuits, there's nothing there, just wasteland.

Forget the CGI ads, it's all CGI.

Why do you think no-one's buying tickets any more, who wants to sit and stare at a green screen for 2 hours?

Vist Malaysia isn't to bad. The one in Australia was much worse (who the hell is Ron?). Previous Bernie Says outings made me cringe more. Like he has any moral high ground. Perhaps he is the Stig and sees this as social media.

I would CGI-ads on cars...

eh! Before you come out with pitchforks, hear me out!

... if the CVC-money would be divided in a different way. Then you could 'rent' the wing (or an agreed white place on the car) to companies that want to advertise in one Grand Prix, but not the whole year, and not necessarily one team, but a car that is the broadcast.

It won't be long until Bernie CGI's some potential excitement into the dull races, like digital rain, or faint wisps of smoke coming from the engine of the runaway leader.

"Hamilton has a puncture... and what's this? A Tyrannosaurus rex appears to be on track by the hairpin. Do you think the two are related, Martin?"

Me neither until I read this thread. Doesn't bother me one bit now that I saw it, if it brings more money to F1 that's fine by me

I agree it's gone way too far.  Those watching on the television think Vettel won, rather than see Hamilton lapping the field thrice.

Get rid of the on track digital ads/messages, they're bloody annoying. Have them on the grass or whatever if you have to, but on the track is a no no, even more so if they're put there while cars are racing through them as happened on Sunday, that's even worse.

It wasn't as bad as the time when the English were led to believe that Andy Murray won Wimbledon, but for the rest I agree with you.

I actually dislike those CGI ads a lot.

I can understand some helping CGI for explaining goals, limits and results like in track n field events: personal best, qualification limit, silver, bronze, gold and world record limits.

But I cannot tolerate effects put into ads business.

I noticed it and thought it was one clever way of modern advertising. However, if they start advertising too much like that, it could get annoying. With a single case during a Grand Prix I am fine.

In few years time, those adds would appear different in different countries. ;)

I can just imagine, empty guardrails on the site, but full of advertisments on TV. On each TV station their own sponsors, of course. One country could see the advertisment for some drinks, while other for some cigarettes. :p

Plus, each "CG package" for each TV station would come with a seperate fee. More space to be sold, more $ to be gained for FOM.

Hmm...

Why haven't I think of that before...? :D

It was cheesy.

Though I'll tell you what I would love to see, a 'ghost' car for when they show the qualifying battle between P1 and P2 rather than the side by side shots.

Apart from using CGI used for off track ads (the two PETRONAS ads on the outside of turn 1 just after one I mention in the video are CGI) I have seen the FOM already use CGI to create grass in some places to make the tracks look nicer. As to CGI spectators that is not far off at all and it would not surprise me if it has not already been done by FOM (I have not personally spotted it yet though). That is not something new btw, if you ever wondered why some grandstands have many different coloured seats, now you know.

But I feel like others I can just about live with CGI for off track advertisements but when you start putting them in the field of play its a little to far. If the CGI is on track and is related to the sport (like the down marker in American football) then that is ok. But do we want F1 tracks to look like the ice hockey rinks in some leagues then I'm not so sure.

Overlays that show the braking zones and racing line might be pretty cool.

But sticking pointless messages on the track is tacky.

FOM don't need to explicitly tell us to visit Malaysia like we're *******, we already know the whole point of these governments funding the races is to advertise the countries they are in.

In years to come, the cars will be CGI'd (...?) onto the track anyway, this is maybe just a trial run...

i caught a bit of the qatar motogp and i was kind of blown away that they're overlaying live telemetry that follows a bike when seen from another bike's onboard.  f1 hasn't even done that from static cameras yet (afaik), but american motorsport has had that for how many years now?

oh no that's fine guys, better to focus instead on cgi ads that look like they were rendered in 1992 and moving the camera positions around so they favour the ad placement instead of best capturing the action.

i'm not saying they shouldn't consider using technology to create advertising for their sponsors or put ads in creative places - the rolex clock/scoreboard at the pit lane exit works well, for example - what i am saying is that the current attempts at CGI look terrible and are distracting and offputting.  the messages at the start/end of races have been incredibly amateurish, now we get that visit malaysia ad slapped in the way of the action?  what the hell.

Next thing we know, Bernie will issue instructions to CGI out the cars of teams that have displeased him. On second thoughts, I think that may have happened already to the Manor car on Sunday...

The Manor didn't need any help to be invisible, it managed that all by itself.

With the unfortunate aviation occurrences that have impacted travel to their country in recent times, a campaign like this is predictable  :o
