Barcelona Pecking Order

The nature of the circuit is such especially the technical aspect and the aerodynamic demand that you need to have a well balanced car with good downforce to br competitive.
I want to know from all of you guys as to how the pecking order will be in Barcelona after the addition of upgrades to various teams.

It'll be interesting to see the order.. there's always some changes, it's almost like the season hits a reset button and it's like Melbourne all over again. Some teams leave happy and some leave demoralised.
For example Ferrari could edge closer, or Merc could surge ahead out front. Williams could close up to the front, or they could fall behind Redbull.. etc etc. I don't like to make predictions but half the fun is not knowing and then finding out.

You can go well in Barcelona and then not go as well in Monaco or Canada, or vice versa or any combination. The 3 week break does typically give certain teams a chance to recover some if they've had a rushed time of things pre-season and into the early flyaway races, so we can see changes here that do represent true changes in the pecking order, but again, Barcelona is not necessarily 'typical' of the average F1 track nowadays. I would say it, like other tracks we've already come to, will provide more *indications* of the strengths and weaknesses of the cars, but can hardly be considered as a reliable guide as to the proper pecking order.
This thread is about speculation. Obviously none of us *know* what the pecking order will be, whether there's 2 weeks of development still to be done or just 2 hours.Thread is pointless as there is sill two weeks of dev to be done.

Barcelona is just another track with its own unique demands and characteristics.

How many shocks such as McLaren (with their two great drivers) jumping well up the field in Barcelona due to unleashing potential, have we actually seen the likes of in the last decade or so?
Alonso himself has tended to be the provider of that extra something in challenging for the top places. I think it will be business as usual for the majority. Most of the hope for McLaren is based on them suddenly coming good when their test program has finally finished, it's not like they're a Brawn GP with a significant trick up their sleeve.

Mercedes and Ferrari will battle for the win. other than that it is not possible to predict too much. (it depends on who brings better upgrades, solves the reability problems etc.)

I don't think there will be a huge change - I expect McHonda to make a leap forward in terms of performance bringing them closer to Williams in qualifying, but probably will still be struggling with reliability. Red Bull, with their budget you'd assume might be able to eek more out of their package than TR. An updated Ferrari engine could benefit Sauber. Therefore I will guess at a qualifying result of
Merc
Ferrari
Williams
McHonda
Lotus
Sauber
Red Bull
Torro Rosso
Force India

I doubt much will change in the pecking order. Perhaps Sauber and Toro Rosso falling back a bit into the clutches of McLaren and Force India, as we saw flashes of that in Bahrain.

It depends very much on the weather and what Pirelli bring
There might even be quite a difference between the pecking order in Q and the pecking order in the race.

Waay out on a limb here:
- Mercedes
- Ferrari
- Red Bull
- Williams
- McLaren
- Torro Rosso
- Lotus
- Sauber
- Force India
- Manor
The three teams with the most potential to improve are Red Bull, McLaren and TR.
If Renault can get off its lazy, incompetent derrière and deliver the promised reliability upgrades (so the motor doesn't need to be turned-down to Clio outputs the whole weekend) then both RB and TR will take a significant step forward.
Of course, almost equally likely is that Renault goes backward, all their motors explode (along with Horner, Marko & Mateschitz) and a new Franco-Prussian war ensues.
McLaren will probably benefit the most from the 3 week break and if the progress made so far is any indication, they could jump into the mid-pack.

It's not about the track though, it's about the fact that it's the first time they return to Europe and the first time they have 'major' upgrades on the car, that they've been preparing for since winter/Melbourne.

Lotus

I think that the changes in the pecking order can come only from teams that will introduce advanced PUs, that means (maybe) FER, RB/STR and MCL
#38
Posted 26 April 2015 - 08:54
It will depend on the upgrades - Ferrari might very well be faster with their new updates to the car and engine.

I think RB will jump Williams, but realisticly we'll have to wait until Ferrari's 3:rd engine before their might be a change at the very top. So..
Merc
-
Ferrari
-
-
Red Bull
Williams
Then unchanged.

I initially put McLaren at #2 behind Mercedes, but I felt I had to be at least slightly fanboy realistic. Instead of just fanboy cuckcoo. I'm yet to be completely realistic.

This is my guess for the competitive order of the cars. The drivers could make a difference such as Force India's more experienced drivers beating Toro Rosso's rookies or McLaren's WDC's beating the Saubers etc.

I suspect it will be as it is now. Maybe some jostling between McLaren and FI but I doubt the pecking order will really change much.
#49
Posted 27 April 2015 - 01:39
All depends on how hard Mercedes are on the tyres. If they have worked on it then they'll dominate like last year. If they still haven't worked it out then they could have a race like 2013 where they just tumbled down the order after eating the rears alive.
I think they'll dominate Spain though. The track suits good aero and they are still stronger than Ferrari in that area.
Monaco and Canada with the SuperSoft tyres though? Well that's when the season could start turning on it's head.

Posted 27 April 2015 - 02:09
Barelona is one of the most aero heavy races of the year
Then you get:
Monaco: free for all
Canada: Engine Power and braking is the key
Austria: Engine Power and traction
So what you see in Barcelona will be very different in the following 3 races
