Ferrari are dependant on how hot it is, if it isn't anything but hot and sunny at the weekend then Merc will be in again.

Who invented those corner names? I have never heard any of them being used.
"And Vettel goes for the inside at Turisme de Catalunya!"
"Hamilton has got a run on him through Placo-Sanit Gobain!"
Posted 30 April 2015 - 19:52
Probably the corners were sold.

I get so mad whenever i see that awful chicane at the last corner. FIA
Posted 30 April 2015 - 20:55
A corner sponsored by Europcar
To be fair that corner is so shity (leads to one of the worst flowing chicanes in the calendar, and was designed to take 2 great corners out of the track), that I think being named after a freaking rental car company is very fitting.

Valencia was better than Barcelona. That's how much I like it.
Posted 30 April 2015 - 21:20
the race in 1991 was good.
Posted 01 May 2015 - 04:22
I focused on the 'Pirelli build up' bit and immediately thought, 'more bloody marbles. They really should do something about their crook tyres'.

I agree about Valencia being better.
Although I don't agree with your tone though. Valencia was boring at first but the last two or three GP were actually quite exciting.

They've always been sponsored. I remember the old names though.
T1-2 Elf
T3 Renault
T4 Repsol
T5 Seat
T7 Wurth
T9 Campsa
That chicane on the back straight was Nissan
La Caixa
T12 Banc de Sabadell
T16 New Holland
FUN FACT:
The last 8 Spanish Grandprix have had 8 different winners.
So we have Massa, Kimi, Button, Webber, Vettel, Pastor, Alonso and Lewis.
Who can make it 9? Rosberg would have to be the best bet.
Posted 01 May 2015 - 08:15
Didn't realise they'd changed some of the corner names (or seemingly, like Campsa, if the graphic at the top of the page is anything to go by, have got rid of some of them altogether).
Anyway, too early to guess about the weather but I'd say chances are it'll be dry (last race that was anything other than bone dry all race was 96 I think, can't even remember the last time there was a session there that was anything other than bone dry with only dry tyres being used).
Hopefully Ferrari will give Mercedes a battle. Unfortunately it's not overly easy to pass on track, so probably the best bet for anything other than a Mercedes win other than reliability/being knocked off track is other cars either managing to make the undercut work, or getting ahead of the lead Mercedes at the start and managing to keep them behind.
Posted 01 May 2015 - 08:38
Ah before they changed the tires for Redbull, the start of 2013 was crazy with the belted pirelli tires.
Posted 01 May 2015 - 09:03
Yeah I still get sad when I see the final chicane - those last two corners were awesome to see F1 cars fly through. And its not like its helped overtaking.

I think it was actually a good race. Everybody whining about the Pirelli tires that dont last long and Ferrari saying **** it and going full speed with 4 stops.

Alonso wins.

Fun fact: Ferrari tested at that track, with those tires, in a 2011 car, just a few weeks before the race.
What a surprise that they had the best strategy.

I'm sure they could have found a better solution to unsuitability of the runoff on those corners (especially given the MotoGP still used the old layout).

I seem to remember Mercerdes tested 2013 tires that year with the 2013 car.. And winning two of the next three races afterwards..

I feel Mercedes will struggle with tyres in the race... But the real question would be that whether this will hinder them winning in the end.

Yes, and then they weren't allowed at the next test session, unlike Ferrari. They also tested at the track after the race.

Looking forward to seeing what the Ferrari updates bring. Amazing track btw, it has a little bit of everything.. I love it in racing games.

But they didn't butcher the final 2 corners because of overtaking (though it was a factor, too), it was because of safety as there wasn't a ton of runoff there.

Hmmmmmm. It's Monday of a race week, the first Euro race of the season no less, could we perhaps forget the "your driver is crap despite his (choose a number between 1 and 4) WDC's" crap, and get on to the race? Of course the Hamilton/Mercedes contract stuff is legit, this is the big announcement week according to Mr. Lauda right? Anyway ..... consider this as a bump to the top for this thread, a race thread belongs on page 1 at the very least. Just my humble opinion of course.

I hope it rains cats and dogs.

I just want them to start racing again I hate these 3 week droughts.
Want to see significant progress on the honda pu
Need to see what this short nose business is all about on the redbull
See if Kimi can get on top in the ferrari
Want to see williams catch back up to the front 2
Want to see ferrari consistently challenging merc
A few gremlins in the mercs (both of them) would be good for the sport too
Want to see how many renaults go bang
Want to see if Rosberg hasn't completely lost his bottle
Will Maldonado see the chequered
Will Alonso get points in Spain? Will Button beat him?
Will it just be another easy win for Hamilton?
Bring on Friday

I'd like a rain-free weekend. I hate these 3 week breaks, and I want no weather-delayed starts, or extended yellows.
I want to see significant progress on the Honda pu.
I am interested to see what this short nose business is all about on the Red Bull, and if it works!
I want to see Bottas in the Williams dominate his team-mate.
I want to see Rosberg continue to drive aggressively, as he did last race.
I'd like to see both McLarens finish, with 1 (at least) in the points.
I'd like a win for Kimi in the Ferrari, based on pace, not strategy.

Can someone explain to me how Pastor got P2 with that lap quoted in the openingspost?
He misses at least three apexes, of which 1 apex big time, and at several corners there seems to be quite a bit of space on the inside.

It's an intelligent commentary on the media platform where this discussion is taking place.
I hope so, because it is brilliant.
Posted 05 May 2015 - 10:35
It was a very quick lap and he kept good speed through all the corners. The apex at turn 5 is hard to get to as the track falls away from you but he lost very little time there.
At the backstraight however he misses de apex by 5 metres. I think it just tells us the Williams was a fantastic car that weekend, and many drivers could have performed as Maldonado did that day.
Surely this was not one of the all time greatest laps, yet he achieved a P2 (later pole position because of Hamilton's technical DQ) with it.
Nevertheless, it striks me that in T5 many drivers elect to miss the apex in favor of more speed through the turn itself.
