This was a great rule, and I think it would again be a good way of showcasing new talent and making Friday's busier at the track? Would stop 3rd drivers having to kick one of the regular guys out of the car on Fridays too.

Not going to happen, smaller teams are going to complain the costs of running a 3rd car are to high and will be unfair if other teams can run 3 cars and they can't...

How about if the 3rd car was last year's car? Surely costs are lower to run that than manufacture a 3rd car in the current spec?

Still requires transporting around the world, plus you need spare parts, engines, etc and personel to operate it.

There's a reason they have the stupid rule about allowing third driver drive in FP1 on Fridays in place of one of the race drivers ....

If the formula's financial nonsense were sorted out, then there would be more cars and drivers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The habit of disrupting a driver's weekend by replacing him on Friday morning is solely about money.

I think it'd be more cost effective if they (the 5 last teams in the previous WCC) simply had more track time during the weekend. Say extra 30 minutes before each of the weekend practice sessions.
But with engine reliability being so fragile and important...
FIA really fvcked up with only 4 engines per season.

The more the merrier, IMO.
And retirements in qualifying preventing racing from occurring - like Jenson or Alonso not be able to compete - shouldn't happen in the 21st century.

The teams all take 3 cars with them to every race, they just don't build up the third spare car unless needed, so other than having to ensure sufficient staff to build up 3 cars costs shouldn't rise greatly. The concern however would be that if the third driver damages their chassis and then a race driver damages theirs, there would be no spare, unless the teams brought a fourth chassis.
But I'm all in favour of running a third car during free-practice to develop young drivers and undertake the development work allowing the race drivers to concentrate on the race set-up. Can scrap in-season testing then as well.
