When you see clips of races in the 70s there are no kerbs.

There were kerbs in the 70s. I think they started to appear in the late 60s/early 70s
Fair enough.
Does anyone know why?

I guess it was to prohibit stones, gravel and grass to end up on the track when drivers cutted the corners. And then the kerbs are (were) high so that drivers shouldn't use them and stay on the tarmac

Because this is what you get when you don't have them:
Nowadays the painted kerbs at the beginning of a tarmac runoff are useless.

Besides keeping the track clean it takes the honor system out of play. Trusting drivers to use the actual tack and not the faster cut across a corner is about as futile as herding cats.
