Picture of BARs new semi-periscope exhaust system and gearbox wing during testing today.

The gearbox wing is suppose to direct the exhaust flow to the back, avoiding the main rear wing.

Ross, it's a "newbie-light"

A driver without a super-licence must have a (non-red) rear light during testing to warn other drivers.

Ever since the 60's, most F1 cars can be described as pretty odd-looking contraptions. And everyone's pretty desperate to win, except no-hopers like Minardi.

I thought you had to have a SL before they'd let you drive an F1 car?

Nope, that's why Raikkonen was able to test last year, and that's why F1 teams are forever able to test young drivers.

I see. I thought Frans had doctored the pic.

I hate the rookie tagging. When I started racing karts I had to put a big X on the back of my helmet in tape to identify myself as a rookie. Why they make you identify yourself on the back is a mystery though. No one's so slow they'll be lapped in a kart race.

That looks like JV's helmet in the mirror though

In the CART races rookies sometimes have to have special markings on their rear wings and/or the rain light on (at least on the one oval race I saw where this was the case)

Desmo, my nephews race karts. I've been to several of their races and I've seen karts being lapped. What type of karts on what type of tracks do you race?

looks like BAR will try anything at the moment to make the car go faster.

What I can't understand is why the other teams using similar systems are not using this extra wing.

So I guess this design is a retro-Honda thing....not a BAR thing, well I hope it still works!:p

There was a chain link fence between the camera and the car?

tifoso- I raced long ago in the 70s, my dad and I shared a kart, we raced in diffent weight classes. We ran 100cc rotary valve sprint karts. Bug Wasp and Birel chassis both direct-drive and clutched, mostly Komet K88 and K78 engines after a flirtation with a BM (not kiddin' they're Italian, doesn't mean the same thing there I guess)with a homemade third transfer port arrangement engine. The karts haven't changed much really since then. The biggest difference technically is the amount of time adjusting of weight distribution and measuring tread temeratures now as far as I can tell. A surprising number of the guys we raced against wound up in CART and other high-level racing series.

Some questions:
1 - Didn't Ferrari and other teams already uses some exaust sistems that work on similar ways?

2 - How many GP's untill FIA forbids that extra wing?

The perspective of the picture is a bit misleading. The BAR exhaust is coming out much further to the rear of the car than the other teams with periscope exhausts. In short it comes up right under the rear wing, or very near it. To avoid it melting the wing, they added the new deflector. Now whether bringing the exhaust that far back was done for increased performance or was a necessity of the car design is still unknown.

However they have said this has been in the pipe(no pun intended) for a while. I for one have faith in BAR. They admitted they went for reliability rather than speed at the start of the season. Unfortunately they did not really get it, but I feel their development throughout the year will be on par with last year.

Hopefully they will start to whup Jordan and JV will get some of his fire back and start whuppin' Panis, rather than simply matching him.

That extra wing is a nice work-around for the maximum of 3 rear wing elements rule. I wonder how many more teams will have something similar when we get to Monaco!
