Someone get a message through to the Autosport staff on Twitter and the Autosport Twitter account to stop linking to the Beta site when linking to articles.

The beta site is riddled with template issues, the images are low quality sample images and have 'Sample Image' displayed on them, it's not finished, you shouldn't be pushing a incomplete website on Twitter.

Beta version: A version of a piece of software that is made available for testing, typically by a limited number of users outside the company that is developing it, before its general release.

It's still on our to-do list!

I'm afraid that the full site rebuild means that that's quite a busy list at the moment...

Ok the site is 'rebuilt'

Any chance of shunting your faithful members request upwards in the queue?

Don't make us go back to IRC! It's nonstop anarchy and weirdly detailed reminiscences of Carry On films in there!

Autosport! Lord Heseltine! Do something! Save us!

New site is still in beta? WTF? You guys are as old and reticent to change as Bernie? Either shoot it (regardless the money you've spent) or pull the switch trigger already...  (Personally, the "new" design looks like everyone else's new design and, I think, that makes the site less special - so I would shoot it).

Just use IRC - there are links ^ that way.

Recent experience in the hills has reminded me that pissing into the wind unsatisfying.

Autosport Live this year appears only available on Beta. This crap refuses point blank to function correctly on my lap top. Can the development team do any worse?

It is as poor as most new 'upgrades' being pimped and launched across the Interweb Multiverse, the designers all appear to have no idea what make a simple intuitive page. We might as well get resigned to the fact that the BETA will eventually be the site, poor as it is it will be our future.

Well this is a clear mistake, I only wanted text updates since the pictures and tweets mean nothing for the live testing, doing text only then mean we do not get the number of laps run anymore, information which should rightly be in the timing box.

Even weirder, now it does give me the number of laps when text only.

Not for me

Well then guess we are back to the BETA having issues it should not have, which one could expect to have been fixed in the past 8 months. For what it is worth I am on Firefox version 43.0.3

On the Kindle tablet I have both silk, (Kindle/Amazon default) or Dolphin. the lap chart doesn't display on either. On the laptop IE9 on Vista, the Beta Live just will not function. Every time that I have attempted to get on it the laptop has crashed and I have to force a reboot. I am not prepared to entertain Firefox, tried it again recently when I then got hit with a programme called Istartsurf which completely took over the computer. Impossible to get rid of, I ended up having to buy a programme (€50) called Revo Uninstall to get rid of it. Somehow, the Kaspersky anti-virus that I run was not able to detect it. Seems to me Firefox is riddled with all manner of nasties.

I seem to remember that Google's GMail was in Beta for about four and a half years. Hopefully we'll get out of Beta sooner than that...

Incidentally, this is linked to my comment earlier in this thread about the restoration of the old live chat logs not getting to the top of our list of priorities. It's definitely still on the list, but getting the Beta to work properly and then turning into the main site has to be our main priority for the next few weeks!

There seems to be an error in the way we're recognising which posts are text and which ones have images/Tweets, etc. embedded in them. The text updates should definitely be part of what appears in text only mode - we'll look into this.

Technically it should be fora.... ;)

Also a forum was originally a roman square where markets, electioneering, sports, etc. could take place - so even though there were lots of activities in one place, it was still referred to as the 'forum'. As such, I think its fine for a collection of discussion boards to be referred to as a 'forum'.

No votes for taking it upmarket and calling it the Autosport Agora?

If the 'Forum' button takes one to the 'Forums' ===> Should be 'Forums' - 'Forums' - Fora comment is noted and correct, it should be 'Internet Forums to 'Internet Forums'.

"It's a warm summer evening, circa 600 BC. You've finished your shopping at the local market, or agora... and you look up at the night sky. There you notice some of the stars seem to move, so you name them planetes or wanderer."

Installed a Firefox add-on called "Tab Memory Usage"

Memory usage with the same content: (loading the page, don't do anything else

old: 4m

new: 31m.

The new Autosport version is in this regard the opposite of mobile friendly.

Regards

A larger file size is to be expected - the old version of Live had mostly text with a few images while the new version has far more images as well as other embedded content such as Tweets, etc.

We're serving different sized images on mobile and desktop. If those figures were pulled out from Firefox on the desktop, then you're seeing a much larger file size for the new Live than anyone should be loading on mobile. Additionally, there is an option to switch to text updates only (ignoring our images and any embeds which support images or other high bandwidth media). If anyone is struggling with file sizes on mobile, I'd recommend that you use Live with this turned on.

We've tested the new version of Live on a number of different devices and we're actually pretty happy with the results and the loading speed. My own phone is a model which came out in 2013, but it can load a whole page of live from the Barcelona tests (with nine hours of coverage and updates including images) without any trouble.

I've tried it on every device from an abacus to the iMac14 but I can't find live chat anywhere.

On the new format, there are social media links for each post - which I can see is a step forward technically.

However, these do not work on mobile devices, which is surely the target market for social media interaction?

I wanted to wait until I could find out whether it was feasible before commenting, but I'm pretty confident that we will be able to preserve the live chat archive in some form or another. I'll let you know when I've got some details to share.

Any news on this?

Or did I miss something?

You only missed this:

It's still on our to-do list!

I'm afraid that the full site rebuild means that that's quite a busy list at the moment...

The live chat archives are still in the database (and you can still access access them by visiting pages like this and clicking the live chat option). We're not planning to delete them without looking into a way of preserving them.
