Its race day already in Suzuka!

Normal service resumed at the Japanese GP: Mercedes front row lock out. Ferrari and Williams in the fight for the best of the rest. Red Bull somewhere behind them. And many penaltys applied again. But wait, one thing has changed....

CP0n_7tUcAArOes.jpg
Nico Rosberg secured with his 17th pole position of his career - his first since the Spanish GP and just his 2nd in this season - the best position on the grid ahead of his team mate Lewis Hamilton, beating him by just 0.076 seconds. Just a few tenths behind them Williams driver Valtteri Bottas qualified with an stellar lap on P3, just ahead of Singapore dominator Sebastian Vettel and team mate Felipe Massa. Daniil Kvyat has to start after his tremendous accident in Q3 from the pitlane after his team changed the completely damaged chassis, the gearbox and the Power Unit. Nico Hulkenberg has after his incident with Massa in Singapore to face a 3 place drop (in the end it is a 2-place drop, yeah I know) from P11 down to P13. Max Verstappen got the same penalty with the same consequences (from P15 to P17) for "stopping the car in an potential dangerous position". A shame that the FOM was not able to show us anything from that....

Ohh, and as we are talking about the FOM: Dont be surprised if you see something like that during the race (if you saw the qualifying than you know what I mean ;)

Looking like there'll be some rain over night but should clear away before the race...

Just checked up on the latest weather forecast, it seems there will be some pretty significant rain overnight which will carry on till around 9-10am (local time), from then on in there will be some patchy light rain showers before things start easing up late afternoon.

In any case, I there's a high chance the race will start wet.

Interesting to look at the teams who split their longrun tests between hard and medium tires, Force India, Lotus and Sauber. For all three the car with  hard tires had better lap times, indicating that they were carrying clearly less fuel. So at least those teams probably plan the strategy to be Medium-Medium-Hard.

I'm so glad you put the times up - I wasn't confused by Marklars post as I figured I already knew the race was starting at 07.00 BST :( I'd have been very upset if I'd have turned the TV on ready for the build up (probably around 06.30) only to see them already 20 laps into the race

Tire trouble expected because of the pressure limits: http://www.autosport...t.php/id/121016

Button: "It's going to be tough for everyone because the pressures are so high, the tires are just going to be overheating after one lap. They end up being like balloons because the pressures get so high."

Grosjean: "The pressures are massively higher than what we would normally run."

Pirelli are an embarrassment to this sport.

The start should be interesting, as conditions could be very tricky after overnight rain.

Looking forward to a dry race. Aside from what I imagine will be a fitting tribute to Bianchi, I need no reminders of what transpired last year.

Why don't Pirelli just supply tyres and recomendations? "We recomend this, but if you do anything else it's up to you."

So much fuss being made over tyre pressures right now that I don't expect them to be an issue during race. Mercedes certainly don't seem all that fussed by the tyres this weekend and you'd think they'd be first to complain after Singapore.

easy Merc 1-2, Lewis jumping Nico at T1 and staying ahead all race, Vettel fights his way to 3rd ahead of Bottas.

It would be a boring race with Mercedes locking up the first 2 podiums in dry condition. Hoping for some rain to spice up the procession.

So far this weekend there have been no reminders...almost as if someone in charge issued a memo strongly advising for it not to be mentioned.

Ok they just mentioned Bianchi on Sky, although I got the impression Brundle really had nothing to add. Perhaps he's not a great believer in anniversaries (not a criticism) and didn't want to rake the coals indepth yet again.
