Nice! But I think the Red Bull Newey design looked better (The more curved podded front wheels that is).

Looks fast.
That's the best concept yet. It looks immense. Better than Ferrari's and Red Bull's X1.
I wonder if the Honda engine in it would be as equally spectacular...

I agree. Having just seen the comparison the McLaren looks much better overall. However I still prefer the smooth contours of the the RB's podded front wheels.

I was thinking that safe driver extraction by the medical services would be very difficult. Having said that, how do the medical services extract drivers from closed cockpit LMP cars?
Posted 03 December 2015 - 07:57
No rake. Looks slow.

An aero dynamic door handle on the outside?
Yes, but how do they extract the driver safely? In F1 they can attach a neck brace and remove the driver (upwards) while s/he remains seated, thus securing their whole body (feet and legs excluded).
Posted 03 December 2015 - 08:11
Surely you're ribbing us.
Thing looks hideous, and it's just another also ran. Newey had the original concept and years before these copycat "concept" renderings
He was the first to do it, yes... but Newey didn't create anything revolutionary though.
He just did the obvious. Got an F1 car and enclosed the wheels and added a cockpit. Apart from that it's pretty much an F1 car, the obvious evolution of an F1 car.
I am sure if you asked any aerodynamicist if they could do 1 thing to an F1 car without restriction it would be enclose the wheels. Newey certainly didn't come up with the idea.
The McLaren MP4X looks like a race car, the X1 looks like a gimmick.

I assume if there were enclosed cockpits there'd be release mechanisms to remove the 'lid' entirely, exposing the cockpit as it is today.
Edit: Actually there's bodywork above the driver's head, I missed that. Good question then...

First Q is: exactly who will pay for McLaren's car? See no stickers of substance; at least Newey's car has backing. Clearly the car was designed in the past and has no future: about the only sponsor of substance is Johnnie Walker, which is, er, walking soon.

Maybe explosive bolts to fire the canopy into the sky.
It would certainly improve "the show"!
McLaren sponsored by Martin-Baker

i think they still need roll hoop. it looks like the roof is almost touching driver's helmet and doesnt look like it's strong enough to withstand impact.
nice livery overall but I still dont like that mcswoosh in the middle of the nose, it just looks out of place. I hope they will ditch that thing for mp4-31.
Posted 03 December 2015 - 08:57
While it looks decent and the canopy is one of the more interesting implementations yet, the front wheel arrangement looks a bit silly - on the Red Bull as well.
Why bother keeping up the open-wheel façade? Just make a light sportscar like the unofficial concept by Mark Hostler:

So is this just a 3d model or something more relevant? Anyone can draw a fancy concept car.

Unlike the Red Bull concept, the McLaren MP4X isn't really relevant. It is based on many technologies that aren't available yet or are currently in their infancy. One of the descriptions for instance (in this case the canopy) mentions the need for easy cockpit access in case the car has rolled over, yet the design shown looks anything but.

That's a concept. Almost every concept car has those qualities.

May be I should try one with a flux capacitor.
In all fairness, given the technology they plan to utilise I'm not sure the concept is that impressive.

May be I should try one with a flux capacitor.
Doc Brown first thought up the flux capacitor in 1955 so it's hardly new technology.

This is clearly a Marmite thing.

My initial reaction was ugh, yuck, looks really, really horrid.
But that's what I say most years in February after new aero/body regs come into force, and by June/July I'm looking back at my archive vids and going "wtf were they thinking..."
For me though, it's not open wheel. We already have LMP and other similar formulae.
Edit: I've been trying to find images of a pranged LMP that lost its external bodywork, because when I saw it my initial reactions "hell...that's just a fat F1 car"

except very artificial tire caps, the rest of the car especially canopy are spot on.
I hope to see canopies as soon as 2017.

Been there, done that.

I like it. One of the few instances of a concept car that looks like it could actually work, most really don't.

Looks mean. Only bit I don't like is the rear wheel arches from the side view, looks like they have been put on back to front.
I like the RBR concept too but the nose looks too flimsy for my tastes (although that was imagined when the high noses were still allowed in F1).
