Classic Champcar for lovely Laguna Seca.

Time to head back to the year 2001 when Schumacher and Ferrari ruled F1, Britain ruled rallying and junior single seaters and this man was in charge of America.
More specifically we are focusing on champ car and the battle between Gil De Ferran and Kenny Brack. The venue? Laguna Seca, home of the legendary corkscrew.
I propose we do a watch along tomorrow (Sunday) 5pm GMT in classic indycar thread style.

One rule though. No...
Just in case people want to go in blind as it were.
Hope it might be fun.

The end 90s/early 2000s were fantastic for us motorsport fans, F1 was still exciting, WRC was hugely competitive and CART was right up there as well. Oh how times have changed...

what about a more comprehensible race? I remember watching that and thinking: where did the heck "Racewinner" come from?

I would do, but 5pm is a bit early for me! :-)

I'm up for this. The close season is boring as hell.

So we just all start the YouTube video at the same time and comment "as live"? Yeah I'm up for that. Especially as I don't remember that race
Yes an "as live" race, I realise now I didn't make it that clear in the OP
If the general consensus is that 5pm is a bad time the start time could easily be moved if that would make it better for everyone.I would do, but 5pm is a bit early for me! :-)
Also side note the title is meant to have from instead of for, I messed up apologies.

Great idea. Would love to take part, but unfortunately I can't
If the timing is poor for this it can always be moved and this can always be done again some time if people want it.

The idea of doing a "classic Champ Car" for Laguna Seca 2001 is so perverse it's brilliant. I'll see what I can do to check in tomorrow.
That is, if I'm not too wound up over who the father of Rachel's baby is. Or for that matter whether I can tear myself away from my Sega Dreamcast.

I sure hope nobody flips wildly in the race. With Gonzalo Rodriguez (RIP) in 1999 and Patrick Carpentier in 2000, that would make it three years in a row...

Pedantic question: 5pm GMT for start of video, or 5pm GMT for actual point in the video where the cars roll off on the parade lap?

I don't think I'd be able to do it until about 8.30pm, so don't y'all wait up for me!

It wouldn't be an Indycar thread if there wasn't at least one person confused about the start time.

I'd prefer a little later, but if we stick to 5 that would be fine with me

I think it should be 5pm for the start of the video. If I remember my US broadcasts from that time correctly, they have very short pre-race shows. Except at the Indy 500 when they seem to start at 7am.

I'm game for this, though 5pm is a little too early for me to start, personally 6 pm works better for me but being late to the party I can understand if others don't want it moved now.

So, when does the race start today?
#27

The majority seem ok with 5PM so I think maybe we should stick with that. It's my fault for not organising it better. Sorry. As long as a decision is made so I can plan my evening around it.

So starting time is 1 hour and 3 minutes from now? Just to keep tradition

Laguna races are almost required by law to be terrible, I'm not optimistic for this running.

With Penske locking out the front row it'll have be one of them. I don't see de Ferran repeating his qualifying crash.
#31
Posted 24 January 2016 - 16:47
I'm gonna tune in at 5 for the first hour or so... If it defies Laguna tradition and is good, I'll pick it up again later!

Imagine if Helio Castroneves could finish consistently. Then he'd be a championship shoo-in.
