Sorry to hear, via Joe Saward's blog, that Nigel Roebuck, Motor Sport's GP Editor and long-time Autosport contributor, is in hospital following heart problems.

Here's to a swift recovery!

Nigel was the main reason I kept reading Autosport for as long as I did. Very best wishes to him for a rapid recovery.

Pleased to read that Nigel is recovering from this setback - and hoping that recovery continues to 'race-ready' condition.

Stop laying around - man up - and get straight back to work.

All expressed with the greatest possible sympathy, of course... (Glad to hear better news today)

If you happen to read this, Nigel, I treasure a lengthy letter you wrote in April 1978 in response to my approach. With hindsight, it was that letter and subsequent events during my stay in London that summer which eventually steered me from just following motor sport to actually reporting and writing about it.

Hoping you'll carry on doing the same for a long time to come - get well soon.

Indeed - and while on this theme, do spare a thought for Alan Henry - who I understand is not very well either.

How is Pete Lyons doing these days? If he returned to Autosport, I might even start buying it again, just about the best writer they ever had.

I would echo all of the positive sentiments above, with regard to Nigel Roebuck and Alan Henry.  In my view our sport has been, and continues to be, blessed with a number of great writers (present company included) without whom it would not be wonderful.

Pete Lyons is doing fine as far as I know.  You'll find him here: http://www.petelyons.com .  For me, his grand prix reports in Autosport were tremendous.  Towards the end of his time at Autosport he bought a motorcycle from me on which he spent the next few months touring Europe before returning to the USA.

Pete was indeed the best race reporter of his era - and probably the best there's ever been in my view.

I agree. He posted a comment on Jo Saward's blog entry about Nigel, so he is evidently doing just fine.

Yeah but... The times they were writing about, 1971-85, were brilliant. I suspect even AH, NSR and PL would struggle to get too excited about today's fare

Mr.Henry has worsened?? When I bought your book I understood he had a chronic disease, but I didn't know he was worse.

I agree about Pete Lyons- nobody has come even close in race reportage. But Nigel is in the top three for sure (thought I'd throw in some driver-speak there).

Actually, he podiumed.

Also from me, best wishes for a speedy recovery to Messrs Roebuck and Henry. Having been brought up on a diet of Yörn Pugmeister, Heinz Prüller etc. my knowledge of their writings is limited, but I did enjoy their contributions to the Autosport and Autocourse editions on my shelf. Grand Prix level journalism, no doubt.

The older you get, the more bloody crappier every year gets. As Paul Auster wrote: 'The longer you live, the more you live with the dead as much as you live with the living.' (Quoted from memory, but is from 'The Invisble Man'.)

Messrs Henry & Roebuck (and Lyons) were the staples of my formative years as an avid reader (along with DSJ) - hoping both gentlemen have a speedy recovery.

It was Nigels Grand Prix reports and column in Autosport that drew me into Formula One in the 80's. The idea of a fellow Mancunian, United supporter and LCCC devotee being a Grand Prix correspondant seemed terribly exoctic to a 13 yr old! Get well soon Nigel.

I so hope he writes a no holes bared book on his views on formula one racing through the years. I get the impression he has some 'things' to say about various people in the sport.

I think "all holes bared" would be much better! Failing that, no holds barred would be just fine!

Apologies, Pete, I couldn't resist; on offence intended.   :-)

Very pleased to say Nigel on road to a full recovery. Saw him last week and you wouldn't have known he had been ill.

Nigel and his wife Viv attended Alan Henry's Memorial Service last week in company with around a hundred of us and he was remarkably well considering what a desperately close-run thing his encounter had plainly been. The Roebucks are both absolutely brimming with praise for the National Health Service care that plainly saved his life...

Very glad to hear that he's recovering.  He is my generation's DSJ or Grand Vitesse in terms of the quality and readability of his race reports during his time at AUTOSPORT, and I'm pleased that he should be able to enthuse and charm many other enthusiats with the quality of his work for a good while to come.
