Fellow TNF member, good friend and  charity fund raiser  Michael Hipperson has, as many of you will know, been writing his own book over the past few years. I have nothing to do with any of it  but I feel able to bring it to your attention for two reasons. I hope you don't mind.

Many of us feel we have a book on motoring or motor sport we could write, but are put off doing anything because of the dire warning from authors that it is very difficult to get a publisher to take up anything on this subject because the market is so small and the competition great.

The costs we are told as such that you are most likely to make nothing at all from years of labour  - more likely lose money.

Despite all this Michael has done it - and he has self published and had the book printed in UK.

The proceeds will go to the charity Michael has worked tirelessly on behalf of,  with garden parties evening talks at Silverstone BRDC suite  charity auctions and much more for :-

The Little Havens Childrens Hospice for terminally ill small childen  - a wonderfully good cause.

So here are the details - I will certainly buy one  I hope many of you will support it too. Having just seen a small sample  I think it is a great read with a forward by Jim Clark's  most famous  Lotus mechanic Cedric Selzer.

Incidental Michael tells me he will be happy  to  give pointers to any of you thinking of writing your own books in this way.

Hi all!

A long time in the making but I have written a book about my life with cars covering the twenty years 1965-1985

LAUNCH DATE APRIL 24

I was fortunate to have owned cars that were pretty special then but a lot of them have become iconic with stratospheric price tags!

Within the 34,000 words and masses of photographs are tales of motoring fun and laughter not now possible in our now crazy PC world.

It is a charity project the profits of which, ( I hope there are some) will benefit Little Havens Hospice

Please check on the new website and facebook page which go live tonight. These have been created by our own James Thorburn without whom they would not have happened!

http://letthemstare.co.uk/

https://www.facebook...tthemstarecars/

You can pre- order  now  to be posted on publication date via paypal on the above website it could not be easier with a single click.

Michael has also been a good friend and helper at the Herts film show and will be with us on 7th May with some copies and will talk to us about the whole self publishing of motor sport books.

It is a great cause a fascinating story and a mass of photographs from Michael life and times  told in cars along the way. Do go and have a look at the details on the above website.

I was very pleasantly surprised to learn about this book. Mr. Hipperson is an accomplished story teller, judging at least by some of the reminiscences he posted long ago on a Lotus Elise forum. Certainly a(nother) book I must have but, sadly, may not have the opportunity to buy since there is no option to ship to the USA.   Am hopeful this egregious oversight will soon be corrected!

Sadly Australia isn't on the prospective mailing list either.  Hopefully they'll broaden the net before release.....

Have no fear the US and Oz will be catered for!

I have three orders from Melbourne. I will take a walk to our local Post Office and get a price

I am pretty sure there is another stamp rise April 1. Will check it out.

Happily I have just taken the 100th pre-order which I know in the real world is not much but I am pleased.

A taster here.............

A couple of old motors parked in our garden in Suffolk (1975) , the Bora was my brothers.

RTH, thank you for the notice on the Hipperson book. having read some of Michael's stories here, and elsewhere, I am keen to get a copy. I did e-mail to the "letthemstare" site and pm'd Michael a couple of days ago, with a question about shipping to Canada. but as of today have not received a reply. I do not want to miss out on this book, as I'm sure it will be in limited supply. any suggestions ?

thank you, Michael Scott (group7) on the forum, in Canada.

Hopefully the 'illustrious TNFer' wasn't a motor racing fantasist as discussed elsewhere here. ;-)

Seriously, Congratulations Michael, here's to racing towards many reprints!

My copy arrived here in Melbourne today.  I sat down and read it cover to cover, something I rarely do these days.  (No brandy though).

I have to confess that at page 28 I fell off my chair laughing....Michael's recollection of a meeting at Hunt Ball was hilarious and reminded me of similar personal experiences from long ago.

A great read.

Thanks Michael

Received my copy yesterday as well  (also Melbourne..... # 153)    I can only echo the above reviews.    Beautifully produced with great yarns told in the right spirit.   Thanks very much, Michael.   My only problem is trying show some self-control and not devour it in one sitting.

Trust me, ladies and gentlemen, this a cracking read. Michael is a natural storyteller who manages to put you right there and still remain discreet, which must have been a stretch. For me, there were surprising overlaps (970 Cooper S, E=type, etc.), but the book takes you straight back to those days when you could 'get things done'.

He owes me a nights' sleep, as a read it from cover to cover and I my only regret about it is that it wasn't long enough. A top job altogether; it deserves to do very well. Buy one while stocks last - you won't regret it....

Here is the link which, per the website, will be available through May 26th.

http://www.bbc.co.uk...rammes/p03q8mw0

The segment starts around the 3 hour, 18 minute mark.

I hope Michael has great success with his book. As others have noted, it's a highly enjoyable piece celebrating the better aspects of a less politically correct world. Many tales of derring-do, often involving four wheels but frequently concerning two legs!

I have only just started reading it .

It is a really good read, even forgetting the cars it is  a fascinating life story – you clearly have a gift for telling the tale  Michael !

Find myself saying “Yes I used to do that – a lot of familiar references too”………..and I’ll just read one more chapter then I will start work !

It is a superb job – well done ! It is a feel good book - really enjoyable.

I've dipped in on a couple of episodes, including the story of the GT40 and the Essex girl with red patches on the inside of her knees. This is is definitely on the top of my reading pile. Great entertainment and supporting a good cause as well.

Well,  mine arrived today in Canaada.

I started flipping forward from the back with the odd comment "Lucky sod" and then I got to the photo of Victoria-the comment changed to something more heartfelt-like "Lucky B*****d"!

I too spent my early years next to a military airfield- Hawkers at Dunsfold in my case-and we got to watch F86 Sabres and Hunters coming and going...  But I lived on the airfield in a corrugated iron hut-Dad worked for Skyways and then Hawkers through the fifties-then we lived in a Council 'ouse, like everyone else what I knew... You were Looky!

These are wonderful stories in your book-I remember a GT40 with "L" plates going down Guildford high street-it must have been 1964/65 so probably Adrian Hamilton (?), his dads place was not far away.

Your book reminds me of Alan Clarke's "Backfire".  But I suspect that you are easier to get along with...
